My take home from session 7 of the planning you #academiccareer journey series called "Publishing in Academic Journals". Prof @FabAcademic was joined by Prof Anthony Essien & Prof Lucia

1. Getting a research project published in an accredited journal holds benefits for both the researcher and the institution hosting the journal. It is through publication that the research, including its scientific and practical contributions, is disseminated to others in a...
particular field. This makes scientific researchers and practitioners with similar interests aware of new knowledge in their field and it helps to advance knowledge and its application.
2. Prof @FabAcademic said that your research and knowledge is your treasure, thus you have to make sure you publish in trustworthy and accredited journals. Crime is everywhere, even in the knowledge/academic field.
3. You have to state the university your graduated or work at...
this is mainly that you and your institution are recognized, and your affiliation, and for state subsidies towards your university as well as university incentives.
4. Prof Anthony Essien said that he firstly checks with the student if they only just doing their PG degree or intend of pursing a career in academia and then takes it from there with regard to supervising and mentoring.
5. Prof Essien describes his writing process as the art of a painter, every stroke represents every sentence that contributes to highlighting the argument you're trying to make.
6. Furthermore, Prof Essien said that you should use your supervisor as guide to climb the ladder...
in academia. And write with your supervisor so they introduce/launch you to field in a sense, there is power in collaboration. Don't be arrogant.
7. You can't have your name on a paper without substantive contribution. This is a key ethical consideration.
8. Be humble during this process. It's an apprenticeship.
9. Prof Essien said that we need to realise that our papers can be rejected whether you're a new or seasoned academic, what matters is how you react to that. Remember, constructive criticism is important to propel one...
to greater heights.
10. YOU NEED TO FIND YOUR RESEARCH NICHE. What do you want to be recognized for. Your research niche is a specialized corner of your scientific field where you have potential to conduct research and create important, new knowledge for a significant period of
time, e.g., a decade.
11. Do not submit your paper for long paper presentations at conferences, rather submit as a short paper so you can publish in a journal at a later stage. Do this to avoid self-plagiarism.
12. Prof Essien said that your writing should be simple enough for a wide audience to understand, but still have your specialisation and something of your niche. And that it is important to do research before publishing as you read articles in your field you take note of what...
other journals the articles you read are published in.
13. Prof Lucia said that you can choose where to publish from the list of journals you can find of the DHET website, requirements of various journals and look at the references of articles.
14. Links to accredited journals:
This database is compiled from the 6 lists (2020) received from the DHET. We tried to identify the titles with an Open Acces status, however there might be titles that we have missed: collections.nwu.ac.za/dbtw-wpd/textb…
15. Reputable journals provide all of the following things, and predatory journals don't. A reputable scholarly journal provides some form of adequate and qualified review, whether that be peer, editorial, or institutional review.

16. A predatory journal is a publication that actively asks researchers for manuscripts. They have no peer review system and no true editorial board and are often found to publish mediocre or even worthless papers. They also ask for huge publication charges.
17. How can you tell a predatory journals:

19. Prof Lucia said that not all open access journals are fraud, but all fraud journals are open for access. Please note, there are reputable journals that charge, not all that charge are predatory.
20. Poor Quality Journals

21. The h-index is an author-level metric that measures both the productivity and citation impact of the publications of a scientist or scholar. The h-index correlates with obvious success indicators such as winning the Nobel Prize, being accepted for...
research fellowships and holding positions at top universities.
In academia, it is VERY important to be cited.
22. In scientific writing, IMRAD or IMRaD is a common organizational structure. IMRaD is the most prominent norm for the structure of a scientific journal article of the original research type. Each journal have their own formatting requirements.
23. Do your homework before submitting to ANY journal.

This was a very insightful and informative session very very much appreciated especially emerging academics. Next sessions will cover the review process & book publication etc.
