I'm a big proponent of having a "board of directors" in life: a few smart, more experienced friends/mentors/folks who'll answer your call and give you advice. A board isn't quite the right metaphor, but you want that mix of experience ("I've been here before") and accountability.
Sometimes, though, it's just the act of committing thoughts to paper.

I just wrote an email to a friend ("A and B are good options, what do you suggest I do?") and in the process of explaining/marshaling arguments, I realized which option I prefer. Don't even need to hit send.
How I think about these: Daniel Gross' post on writing investor updates.

"You get all the benefits I’m describing ([...] a sense of accountability, etc) before you even raise money. Think of it as a multiplayer diary. Give it a shot!"
