The amount of times I’ve been told as a reporter by residents that Black communities are not used to reporters who look like them telling their stories is truly sad. But we press on.
Reporters forget that residents in these communities are well aware of who parachutes in their communities when tragedies happen.
Editors and other leaders who won’t invest in the the minds of the Black reporters they hire do the communities they cover a disservice. We aren’t tokens, we are here to ignite change you haven’t seen.
If you haven’t figured out how to tap in the talent of the reporter you hired, take that up with yourself.
This isn’t clicks on a story, it’s real life. If you depend on Black trauma for clicks and page views you should be ashamed of yourself.
If you were told you were “too ambitious” just know you were right to begin with.
