“Watchmen” star @ReginaKing’s feature film directorial debut #OneNightInMiami premiered this week at the Venice Film Festival. It’s the first movie directed by an African American woman to be selected in the festival’s history.

The movie, adapted from Kemp Powers’ play, tells the story of one 1964 night and four Black icons: boxer Cassius Clay (later known as Muhammad Ali), activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown.

Filming began in January, and when COVID-19 struck, they considered pausing. “Then George Floyd and Breonna [Taylor] happened, and we decided we had to get this done right now,” King says.

“They're deities. But here, they’re just talking about their fears and concerns and being vulnerable and honest. And unfortunately the conversations they’re having in 1964 are the same that men like them, Black men period, are having right now.”

Kingsley Ben-Adir on preparing to play Malcolm X: “I’ve never thought about one human being that consistently. It’s a weird experience coming out of it. I didn’t want it to end, actually. He really was taken away from us way too young.”
Regina King has been on the road to @watchmen for 34 years. She has no regrets.

Biden said that he would ask the attorney general and Department of Health and Human Services to review marijuana’s classification in federal law as a schedule one drug, the same classification as heroin and LSD. latimes.com/politics/story…
