1/10 Trump knowingly downplaying COVID shows not just his depravity -- gambling w/lives for the sake of image -- but also his utterly for shit instincts & understanding of economics. His fear wasn't public panic (which he stokes constantly) but spooking the markets (cont)...
2/10 He truly thought if he led w/happy talk, the virus, even if bad, wouldn't tank the economy. But one can only believe this if you don't understand how markets work. They respond to real conditions, like mass illness & the fear it engenders. Rosy talk can't "trump" that...
3/10 If COVID was always going to be terrible, it's not like the markets wouldn't notice as people dropped dead, others cut back on going out & spending money, states were forced to shut down, etc., just bc some bottom-feeder Wharton grad was promising happy days ahead...
4/10 But his narcissism, natch, led him to think that would actually be enough...to think that markets are nothing more than a pliable instrument easily molded by a good story, and that he, as a storyteller and salesman, could override the brutal logic of capitalism itself...
5/10 But what he forgot, and his fans have never been able to accept, is that he was always a shit businessman. Multiple bankruptcies, using lawyers to get out of trouble, failure after failure, even WITH the 400m+ in cash and assets from his dad over the years...
6/10 He doesn't understand the economy. The only thing he was ever good at was selling his name, his personal brand, his image. It was all smoke & mirrors. Everything else he's touched has gone to shit...casinos, his real estate deals, TrumpU, steaks...and now, America...
7/10 So not only is he a failure using the metrics that decent people care about -- like mass death, stoking racial hatred, honesty as opposed to corruption, etc -- but even on his own terms (the only ones he cares about, which are about money) he's a loser....
8/10 He could have been honest from the start, pushed for massive stimulus to save the economy from free fall, led the fight against the virus as a unifying cause for the country, and been re-elected easily. But who am I kidding? He couldn't do that, because he isn't a leader...
9/10 He's just that scared little boy whose father hated him, and who could never please that father, and who marinates in self-doubt as a result & papers over that self doubt w/ magical thinking & toxic positivity about his own abilities to make things real that aren't...
10/ And now the nation & world pays the price. He is a symbol of all that is wrong w/America: the style over substance, the packaging over the product, the elevation of bullshittery to a place of sacramental reverence. He and those who revere him are why we can't have nice things

I don't think going on Joe Rogan would have helped Harris. But if it's true that progressive staffers were the reason she didn't -- because they think it's beneath her, or would provoke backlash -- those staffers are puritanical idiots. A brief 🧵...
2/ I detest progressives who think we shouldn't "legitimize" folks like Rogan by appearing on his show. Um, hey precious, don't know if you noticed but he doesn't need our legitimacy. He has the biggest podcast in the world so...
3/ This asceticism which leads some on the left to want to avoid anything that might be less erudite than Rachel Maddow is maddening. Grow up. I know Rogan et al are absurd and ignorant. And I also know millions find them persuasive and important, so now what?...

Folks blaming wokeness for Harris's defeat are hilarious in their ignorance. She did not run on a woke platform. She ran on protecting the border, owning a gun, being a prosecutor, loving capitalism, and rarely talked about anything related to racism, sexism, etc...
2/ The fact that the right decided to tag her w/the label of identity politics is on THEM. It's what they do to Dems whether they are people of color or not, bc MAGA's politic is about white racial resentment and male grievance and Dems are the cause of it all in their mind...
3/ But you can't blame Dems or Harris, for MAGA's inaccurate and deceptive portrayal of their/her politics. The responsibility rests with those who lied and the low information idiots who believed them. The problem is not antiracism or anti-sexism...

MAGA White people are the biggest purveyors of victimhood in America. Always whining about what other people (especially people of color) are doing to them, and rarely taking personal responsibility for their lives. A 🧵...
2/ And so, let us count the ways MAGA whites think they've been victimized or "held down" by people of color, shall we? By:

-- DEI efforts and affirmative action;
-- Critical Race Theory;
-- Immigration (but only by brown and Black folks)...
3/ -- Taxes (which they think, falsely, mostly get redistributed to people of color);
-- Crime by people of color (even tough white folks are 4-5x more likely to be victimized by another white person);...

For those white liberals talking about how they're "mourning," "in shock," and afraid...FFS buck up. I was just in KC at the 17th Annual Urban Summit, w/ a couple hundred Black folk and they are NOT crying or cowering. They are down to fight, like they've always had to. A 🧵...
2/ This is what makes me crazy about white libs/progressives. They do this thing where they get surprised whenever America (the noun) decides to America (the verb). But Black folks have been watching America America for 400+ years...
3/ We act like "this isn't who we are," and damned near every Black person over 40 (and most who are younger too) is is like "where y'all been?" This is among the reasons white progressives need to study the Black freedom struggle more closely...

For those who suggest the big problem for the Dems was information silos -- the fact that Trump targeted livestreamers/podcasters/YouTubers -- and that's where a lot of people, especially young people get info, that's true, but, there's something to consider. A 🧵...
2/ First off, it wasn't Gen Z that delivered the WH to Trump. It wasn't. Yes, Trump did better there than usual but it was really Gen X (my gen) that did this, for reasons I've discussed before. It makes sense. Gen X sorta sucks, however much we like to brag about ourselves...
3/ Second, to the extent those alternative media outlets were implicated (and I agree they were), it's not like that is enough to explain the outcome. It still begs the question WHAT were folks hearing on those platforms? And this is the key, bc the content they heard matters...

Anyone who thinks Trump's win was a "mandate" or landslide, let alone the biggest in 40 years as Tucker Carlson said, is a fool or liar. It isn't close to Obama's wins, or even Clinton's in the EC. Though a clear win, it wasn't an endorsement of his key policies. A 🧵...
2/ So, for instance, voters in states he carried overwhelmingly voted to overturn abortion bans, meaning they didn't endorse the MAGA position on that issue. Same with immigration. Check the exit polls...
3/ When asked about deporting undocumented folks, only 39% favored deportation of all or most, while 56% favored a path to citizenship. If he gets 51-52% of the popular vote but only 39% favor his signature idea, that says something...
