I'm weeping. Let me tell you a story about South African soprano @SchultzGolda, whom I'm bloody proud to call a friend. (Thread)
As a reprobate undergrad, my digsmate and me hosted a "fines meeting" - aka yet another excuse to drink, because Rhodes. Mostly, our guests were, like us, members of the debating society. And, as usual, it was a good time.
At some point, late into the night (maybe early into the morning) someone asked Golda to sing for us. We'd reached that point at which you're no longer drunk - just warm and contented, though you'd probably get arrested if you tried to drive. The darkness was very still.
She sang. The stillness, somehow, wasn't shattered. Instead it became deeper and more profound. Around us, I heard windows open (we lived in a tiny complex and of course we hadn't even considered the neighbours because, well, we were selfish and a bit tipsy).
Golda sang. A hymn, I think. The stars seemed to shine even brighter. Nobody shouted at us or complained. I think they were listening, too. The song finished. We thanked her, and the party quietly disbanded. Around us, I heard windows close.
I had many starstruck, magic-dazzled nights at varsity. That one was the most beautiful of them all. Today @SchultzGolda is taking the opera world by storm. She remains kind, humble, funny and a mensch. Another reason to be proudly South African.
