Raw sewage pours into the fetid waters of Kabul River each day, including some of what comes from the US Embassy and the military hq for Resolute Support NATO.

Reporters at @starsandstripes followed this story for months. Here's what we found:

Each night, sewage trucks from all over Kabul, Afghanistan dump their loads at the Makroyan Waste Water Treatment Plant, the only legal dumping site in the city. But the plant hasn’t worked for ~two years because of poor maintenance (grass grows in the crack of a key pipe). ImageImage
3/10
Sewage dumped at Makroyan is diverted into this pipe before reaching the non-functional plant.
“Since the wastewater treatment plant does not function and its canals are damaged, the sewage from Makroyan dumping site directly goes into the Kabul River" a plant official said. Image
4/10
The impact is felt by about 3,000 families living on the Kabul River near Makroyan. Some told Stars and Stripes that they suffer from persistent gastrointestinal issues due to sewage in the water, which also seeps into underground aquifers that locals use for drinking water Image
5/10
Kamal, a 7-year-old boy playing along the river with his father and brother, told us he often suffers from diarrhea. “It hurts my stomach,” he said of the water. Another man that day said recently suffered from typhoid, a disease linked to contaminated drinking water. Image
6/10
Into the river each month goes ~21,000 gallons of raw sewage from portable toilets at the US Embassy, and ~12,000 gallons of sewage from US and coalition troops, per contractors who shared receipts.
This is just a fraction of sewage from all over Kabul that comes to Makroyan Image
7/10
Repairs to the Makroyan are delayed due to land disputes +difficulty of replacing decades-old parts, said the plant's VP. Until the plant is fixed, “all the wastewater will go into the Kabul River until a new treatment center is built.” Image
8/10
We at @starsandstripes also visited a dump site the Afghan government says is illegally handling the US Embassy's trash. The company said it was only transporting trash per its license. But on our visit, workers showed off their recycling machines.

9/10
One takeaway:
The intl community, although not solely responsible for the situation, should at least hold their contractors to higher standards to ensure sewage and trash does not damage health/the environment, said the Afghan govt's National Environmental Protection Agency.
10/10
Throughout this reporting process, spokesmen would tell us one thing, then our in-person visits/talks with people on the ground would tell us another.
I'm reminded of this Bob Woodward story (linked), with the lesson, "Get off your ass and go there."

Reading court docs of the Marine who firebombed that Planned Parenthood clinic was wild.

The profile: Smart, raised upper-class in Orange County, supportive stepdad, mom a clinical psychologist. High school atheist club. Converted adult Tradcath. Autism/ADHD. Terminally online.
Joined the Marines as a Farsi language analyst. But he didn't get to deploy in 5 years so he called the Chinese and Russian embassies in DC because he was considering offering his services as a mole.

Other Marines said he'd just say the worst things, but they said nothing.
The guy was super-racist in a very standard online way, his text messages showed.

He planned firebombings, an attack on a local power grid with the goal of starting a race war, planting a bomb at Dodger Stadium on a night celebrating LGBTQI+ pride, robbing random Jewish people.

Photos I took for @starsandstripes of airmen in Incirlik Air Base in Turkey unloading pallets of humanitarian aid for earthquake survivors. They've unloaded 423 cargo aircraft since relief efforts began, I'm told. ~4,234 people and 36 rescue K-9s have flown into the base as well.
Airmen push a pallet of humanitarian aid off a cargo plane while deployed to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, Feb. 22, 2023. Senior Airman Robin Mercer, in front, is normally deployed to Germany but was sent to Turkey on short notice after earthquakes on Feb. 6.
Stacks of boxes of humanitarian aid at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey await pickup off the base on Feb. 22, 2023. Labels on the boxes indicated they contained items such as tents, generators and food, with origins from places as far apart as San Antonio, Texas and Shenzhen, China.

A Biden senior administration official confirms the U.S. has secured Mark Frerich’s release, in an email.

In exchange, "the President made the difficult decision to grant clemency to Haji Bashir Noorzai after he spent 17 years in U.S. Government custody," the official said.
A jury found Noorzai guilty of heroin importation and distribution conspiracy charges in 2008. He is considered one of the closest figures to the founder of the Taliban movement, Mullah Mohammad Omar Mujahid.
Mark Frerichs, a former Navy diver abducted in Kabul in 2020, had been living in Afghanistan since approximately 2010 and worked as an engineer on construction projects in the country. The U.S. had offered up to $5 million for information about Frerichs’ disappearance.

A 17-year-old boy reunited with his family at Ramstein Air Field on Friday after they were separated during the chaotic evacuation from Afghanistan, State Department officials said. For @starsandstripes.

I've compiled some stories I wrote and some things learned from reporting for @starsandstripes over the last 3.5 years in Afghanistan. We didn't get much attention at the time but I and other reporters wrote some stories that in retrospect help explain why Kabul fell.
In my first few weeks in Afghanistan I traveled to Taliban territory during a historic ceasefire. Taliban fighters and government soldiers hugged and shared selfies. The general I was with visited checkpoints that had gone unsupplied for weeks...

The crowds so easily united: an interlocuter said the soldiers only fought bc America made them, and said Taliban were only fighting because of Pakistan.
The crowd said: "Death to America! Death to Pakistan!"
Note this common ground after the recent ANDSF surrenders.

This is the worst passage in the story, which isn't as much of a hagiography as I feared.
Still, this is so tired.
Plenty of super fit, well-read, motivated, seemingly well-meaning American generals with the right look and background came to Afghanistan and left it worse off.
Like sure, Gen. Miller got a bad hand. But these glowing profiles about him seem off, when he made a gamble to protect a bad peace deal with the Taliban, hid the war from the American people, and saw the Taliban hold the most territory since 2001 under his watch.
So I've found a worse passage in this glowing profile about Gen. Miller in Afghanistan.

It's just *wrong* to say his airstrikes drove the Taliban to negotiations, without also noting that the U.S. caved in to one of the group's main demands by excluding Kabul from the talks.
