So...I'm going to do this, because I'm kind of annoyed that Paul Krugman is going down this path. And perhaps I'm going to take it personally...since I am a Muslim and started @Princeton as a student the same time Krugman did as a professor so here's a thread...enjoy
1. Paul - no one asked you for this. No one asked you to tell us why Bush or Trump were better or worse. No one asked you to compare anti-Black racism and Islamophobia. You did this. You made the discussion. You decided to evaluate and order the victimization of minorities.
2. Paul - I was a leader of the Muslim Students Association when we were both at Princeton during 9/11 and its aftermath. The FBI came to the university to request records of students. Did you object? Did you even know about it? Did you ask your Muslim students about it?
3. Paul - One weekend a group of Muslims and other minority Princeton students were attacked at a Bar (yes a Bar because some Muslims drink) for their identity. They did not report it to the police, like many other incidents of hate. Did you know about that?
4. Paul - At Princeton many students, such as myself were registered as Special Registrants, and interrogated by US security officials at INS offices and airports. Did you come to my defense? Did you raise any concerns? Did you know? Did you care to know?
5. Paul - When I wrote a biweekly column in @princetonian I received hate mail from a nearby University trustee:

“I suggest you consider going back to your deprived country and stick your head in your koran for the rest of your life."

Did you know?
6. Paul - It would be great to live in your shoes (and thank you for telling us the Iraq War had nothing to do with prejudice, which another thread can handle). But for now, don't try to live in or pretend like you walked in mine.

Today this letter from @Harpers came out with a fairly innocuous message on defending the free exchange of ideas. I signed it because anything that encourages discussion over diatribe, and debate over violence is something I wholeheartedly subscribe to.…
Unsurprisingly the attacks have come fast and furious on the message, the messengers, and the medium. I want to address some of these because they're all part of this desire of the #blobmob to silence and drown out real conversation. It is a detriment to a world on the brink
The first attack is: Everyone is over 40.

That's not true. From myself to @Olivianuzzi to @jessesingal and countless others, that's not true. Not that it matters.

It is time for one long #Coronavirus update. I have been resisting doing this as (1) I do not want to add to the hysteria & the panic & (2) I don't believe in doomsday predictions. Moreover, things have been moving so fast, who knows what's what. BUT it's time for real talk...
Overall, #Coronavirus (the outbreak of #COVID19) is REAL. The effects on your daily life from the fallout will be REAL. The impact society, economics, & politics in 2020 will be severe & REAL. None of this is Fake News. None of this should be downplayed. (2/
People who are trying to silence REAL discussion are doing a disservice to the public interest. This is a 9/11 & 2008 level event in terms of its impact on domestic & international dynamics. This thread is not about creating panic but encouraging a smarter response. (3/

1. The @CDCgov has just released a report showing that life expectancy rose in 2018, for the first time since 2014, inching up to 78.7 years. This followed three straight years of decline marking the tail-end of @BarackObama's presidency.…
2.The 3 leading causes of death, heart disease, cancer & 'unintentional injuries' all showed decreases, although the latter, which includes drug overdoses, showed the most proportional decrease. This was the first decline in 20 years of drug-related deaths…
3. In fact drug overdoses had increased from 17,400 in 2000 to an astonishing 70,200 by 2017, disproportionately affecting poor communities as well as Americans living in rural areas. 47,600 were from #opioids & 78% of these, classified as White…
