Donald Bogle is a national treasure. I've been reading him since middle school and have been hooked ever since.

This story about how Dorothy Dandridge sauntered into Preminger's office and convinced him to give her the part of Carmen is legendary. I could see her as Cindy Lou, but this will always be the role that she's associated with.

This film was the first all-Black film from a major studio to be filmed in Technicolor.

Look at all these adorable children. They deserved careers as extras and child actors, too.

Oh, heyy, Harry Belafonte, how are you?

And THAT is how you make an entrance. There she is, everyone. Look at that presence. An icon.

This song lyric reveals much about Carmen's character. For some reason, she's one of those people who responds affirmatively to harsh treatment. But she's always honest about that, which is interesting.

She is flirting with this man right in front of his girlfriend. You're a bold kid, Carmen. A bold kid.

As someone who has always identified with the Cindy Lous of the world, I feel her pain in this film. She's such a sweetheart.

The Hays Office raised an uproar about the presence of the razor in the fight scene. Preminger did what he could to hide it as much as possible, but it's obvious that that's what Carmen is brandishing.

"The harder I get bumped, the more of me bounces."
There is SO much to interpret in that line...

Darryl F. Zanuck, the production head at 20th Century Fox, was the one who insisted on Dorothy and Harry's singing voices being dubbed by opera singers. Interestingly enough, Olga James is doing her own singing.

Carmen ran across a train flatbed and her makeup is still intact. A queen. LOL, look at Joe.

The chemistry between Dorothy and Harry in this film was real. They got into an almost-entanglement, but he was married, and she was looking for a serious commitment.

This actress playing Carmen's grandmother is Madame Sul-Te-Wan, who had been acting since the silent film days. Her attitude towards her granddaughter is cool and distanced, which reveals a lot about their relationship.

These scenes at Carmen's home are where she's her most honest and vulnerable in the film. It's where we can see the part of her who did dream of something different.

Notice that they're eating peaches. (Wink, wink.)

Notice how Joe's attitude towards Cindy has changed. He's extremely stilted towards her, and he actually told her to leave. She can't pick up on it because she loves him so much.

Oh, Lord have mercy, Jesus; his shirt is off and he's oily...

This was an important film for Harry Belafonte. It wasn't his first, but it was the one that cemented him as a leading man.

"Help the war effort?" That's what we're calling it, now?

Queen Latifah seriously needs to play in a Pearl Bailey biopic. She looks exactly like her.
#TCMParty

Pearl Bailey was not happy that Dorothy Dandridge received top billing in this film. She complained about her all throughout production, cussed at her, and insulted her singing.

Ohh, lovely little Diahann Carroll. She was very drawn to Dorothy, and could see that her reservedness on set was due to shyness and dedication rather than snobbery.

Here is the source book by Prosper Mérimée, which inspired the Bizet opera, which in turn inspired the musical and film. Enjoy:

"The manager's manager" still cracks me up every time and I don't know why.

This song is a complex one to perform, because the actors have to come in at the exact same time so that it doesn't sound jumbled.
#TCMParty

Dorothy Dandridge was beautiful. There's no denying that. But there was so much more to her than looks. Everyone who worked with her said that she was an extremely focused, dedicated performer. And she had a way of expressing vulnerability.

If a man walked up to me in a public space and called me "Heat Wave," I'd wave my slingshot as a warning.

I believe that Carmen does have some sort of deep feeling for Joe. But for some reason, whether innate or through conditioning, she's just not the type of person who would adjust to a settled life. She can't.

This was an important film for Brock Peters as well, who came from the stage. He'll always be known as Tom Robinson in "To Kill A Mockingbird," but his filmography was quite varied.

And here is one of the most iconic, sensual scenes in cinema. We have a shared cigarette, blowing on toes, and gazes that are melting the nitrate.

Those zebra print undies of hers caused a stir with the Hays Office, too, but fortunately they stayed in.

No, Frankie. All ladies do not keep a "back-up" man to foot the bills.

I've always wondered about Carmen's parents. They used the same tactic here that happened in "Pinky," another Fox film, where we see two generations of a family with the middle one missing. Did her mother or father fall out with Granny?
#TCMParty
#CarmenJones
#LetsMovie
This was an intentional choice to dress Carmen in pastels rather than solely "seductive" colors such as deep reds, etc. She may be wanton, but she's not quite a Jezebel, if that makes any sense.

Was it worth it, Joe? So far, he's already lost his career in the army, tossed aside his fiancée for no reason, and is stuck in a relationship with a woman who he knows that he can't have a stable relationship with.
#TCMParty

In my dream world, Harry and Dorothy would have gotten married and had children, Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll would have got married and had kids, their subsequent children would have married, and we could have had a Black acting dynasty.

Oh, Cindy Lou. Let him go, baby. If he could leave you over something like this, it means he had the potential to hurt you later, dear. Go back home to a clean fellow.
#TCMParty
#LetsMovie
#CarmenJones
This is one of my least favorite scenes in the film. Carmen's being unnecessarily snippy to Cindy Lou, knowing full well that she's still in love with Joe.
#TCMParty
#LetsMovie
#CarmenJones
"Bait your hook for fish you can fry."
See? That's mean. And it's a not-so-subtle dig at Cindy Lou's good girl character, implying that she can't keep a man because she doesn't have that "oomph."
#TCMParty
#LetsMovie
#CarmenJones
To my knowledge, Olga James is still with us. She's a performer whom I've always wanted to know more about, but there are so few interviews and other footage of her, and her filmography isn't very long.
#TCMParty
#CarmenJones
#LetsMovie
Cindy Lou also has to face the talk of all of the people back home once they hear about what happened with her and Joe. I feel so sorry for her alone, with her little suitcase, trying to save some dude who isn't worth it.
#TCMParty
#LetsMovie

All of these performers deserved so much more, and to enjoy the full benefits of stardom that their talent should have gotten them. The reason why they didn't is wrong, and remains wrong.

Joe looks like he hasn't showered in weeks. Eww.
#TCMParty
#CarmenJones
#LetsMovie
I've said this on watching the film before, but Carmen can't take the full blame for everything that happened. Joe had that streak in him, and it would have come out in some other way, eventually. Look at his crazy eyes.
#TCMParty
#LetsMovie
#CarmenJones
Whew, Cindy Lou dodged a bullet.
#TCMParty
#LetsMovie

I agree that having Dorothy and Harry's voices dubbed takes away from the authenticity of the film. Their singing voices were fine. And having Dorothy's naturally soft voice would have added to Carmen's complexity.
#LetsMovie
#TCMParty
#CarmenJones
This is an excellent point, too. White stars were immediately given other parts as soon as they made their "big" debuts, but because the roles for Black actors were so limited, they could appear in one picture and then disappear for years.
#TCMParty
#LetsMovie
#CarmenJones
I will always be angry at Otto Preminger for telling Dorothy to turn down the "Tuptim" role. I could see her in that, and who knows how her career might have turned out.

Thank you all so much for joining me. This film has a special place in my heart, and it was wonderful to share it and talk with everyone. And a massive thank you to @tcm for this opportunity. Spread love, everyone, and have a great night! 🥰
