So I was just out for a lunch time run, jogging along the waterfront when I see 100 metres up ahead two ladies walking a little Jack Russell. Suddenly out of nowhere a huge collarless Pitbull comes flying in, attacking the Jack Russell around the neck.
Lots of biting, squeeling etc. I speed up to try and help but just before I get there a big bloke, the Pitbull's owner, manages to seperate them and drag his dog away.
The poor Jack Russell is shaking and bleeding and the two ladies walking him obviously upset and scared too.
I do my best to calm the ladies down and to check their dog is OK, he is, just a bite wound near his leg but he's not really badly hurt. The pitbull owner says "Umm look I'm sorry?" and shrugs. I talk to him and say "You should give these ladies your details, for the vet bill."
I explain the little dog will need to see a vet. At this stage his partner comes over and in that real "Karen" voice says "He already said he was sorry! Seesh". They take their dog (and their 3yo daughter) and start to walk away, they really couldn't care less.
Because I was jogging I didn't have my phone to snap a picture/video of Pitbull family, which sucks because they're going to get away without even paying the vet bill.
So I just say to the ladies "You should try and get your dog seen by a vet quickly"
But then at this exact moment, the Napier Dog Control team, who unknown to us have been parked up in their van and seen it all, swoop in and put their dog catching stick/lead combo around the Pitbull's neck and say "We're seizing this dog!"
It was BEAUTIFUL.
"Karen" goes from being a smarmy bitch to 200% sourpuss, shouting the whole "You can't take our dog" routine at the Council, who assert loudly and clearly they can and they will.
They get the ladies details and say they'll help sort out contact details for payment etc.
When I jogged off Karen was hand-on-hips sniping complaints at one dog control officer while the other officer was loading the Pitbill into the van.
So, chalk this up to things I never thought I'd tweet:
The Napier City Council saved the day!
