Short thread on the laughs of military dictators, who somehow found humour in covert assassinations and policy blunders of epic proportions.

1/ General Musharraf @ 0:33:
2/ Interviewer: "You find your conscience is clear"

General Zia: "My conscience is clear by 200%"

*maniacal laughter* at 0:08
3/ Yahya Khan's amused laughter at the question that he was out of touch with ground realities in East Pakistan @ 1:32, right after he denied reports of genocide.

Must see interview. If a retired Colonel isn't safe from the army's policy of enforced disappearances, who is. (1)

Source:

(@Matiullahjan919's YouTube channel)
They targeted him because he had filed a petition against General Raheel Sharif for handing over Pakistani territory to Afghanistan, without obtaining the approval of the civilian government. (2)
He also questioned #AsimBajwaMoneyTrailDo's appointment as CPEC Chairman. (3)

1/ Imran Khan on why General Musharraf committed treason.

(Today's Twitter Project: compiling all of IK's rants against General Musharraf and the army in one thread. Will take a while! Fortunately, accounts like @mughalbha have meticulous records.)
2/ Imran Khan argued that the United States had committed a grave error by supporting General Musharraf and that the War on Terror could only be won if power was transferred to the people of Pakistan.

Bought Shuja Nawaz's "The Battle for Pakistan" from Liberty Books to figure out what the army found so threatening that it banned the book launch in Pakistan.

Sharing some of his ideas in a thread:

1. US should push for an integrated Greater South Asia as counterweight to China
2. He looks to Imran Khan with hope, & blames the US for "mollycoddling the corrupt civilian leadership" (xxxvi) of Pakistan, which should have put him in the military establishment's good graces...but apparently even this much debate was too threatening.
3. OK, seeing reason for alarm. Nawaz doesn't "support the military as a substitute for civil government" or its "politicization." He wants to provide "constructive criticism" so that Pakistan's narrative can be based on a "verifiable reality."

Phir ISPR dramoN ka kya ho ga? 🧐

Hamoodur Rehman Commission Report 1971: "After analysing the evidence brought before the Commission, we came to the conclusion that the process of moral degeneration among the senior ranks of the Armed Forces was set in motion by their involvement in Martial Law duties in 1958.."
"...that these tendencies reappeared and were, in fact, intensified when Martial Law was imposed in the country once again in March 1969 by General Yahya Khan, and that there was indeed substance in the allegations that a considerable number of senior Army Officers had not only"
"...indulged in large scale acquisition of lands and houses and other commercial activities, but had also adopted highly immoral and licentious ways of life which seriously affected their professional capabilities and their qualities of leadership."

@manzoorpashteen's full VoA interview, via @memzarma

Pashteen asks why press conference wasn't held by govt, as is appropriate for a democracy. He says that PTM is vilified because it opposes proxy wars & ppl who took $33bn foreign funding don't want accountability
#PTMZindabad
Manzoor Pashteen says that if any relative of his is involved in a foreign funded plot to destabilise Pakistan, he will register an FIR against him himself. These rumours about his relatives and foreign funding are just used to turn public opinion against PTM.
#PTMZindabad #PTM
Pashteen says that allegations of foreign funding were made w/o evidence. PTM has obtained clearance for its funding before & will continue to do so. Its jalsas don't cost much. Over 100,000 homes have been destroyed in FATA, bombs exploded, drone attacks...people have suffered.
