I have decided from white people I don’t know I definitely appreciate a sort of formal distance. When some of you act overly casual it tips easily into a banter that feels, well, microaggressive tbh. Also I come from a culture where etiquette is tied to self-preservation.
Like sustained intense eye contact to a lot of you feels respectful but no one in my family expects or wants it from people we don’t know.
My dad often insists on being called Dr or Prof from strangers & I used to roll my eyes. But he was traumatized by his entry to the US: Boston & MIT culture, decades ago. His horror stories of how white students & professors treated him never left him. He trusts few Americans.
I hope “when things get back to normal”™️ we never act out as physically as before. Bowing is super nice! Let’s bow! 🤩
*pauses in covid isolation* IF you are one of my crushes tho I insist you tackle me with hugs & overwhelm me with kisses & cross every boundary & make me consider getting a restraining order 😍

Literally every South Asian & Middle Eastern man dates this exact girl most their life
Do not ask me to explain. I have a sort of Dev-esque brother & every girlfriend is this white girl
an inoffensive slightly bookish non-threatening slender pretty white girl is their thing

How does publishing allow something like this to happen?
Helen’s book was a big success (i wrote the NYTBR cover story so I remember well) & I wish this author on the left could have been honored with an original cover—and perhaps original title—too. This serves no one well. @Flatironbooks how many messes have you made this year?
I genuinely think any author that works with Flatiron Books should have another independent party carefully evaluate all their moves. After American Dirt, I could not imagine a sloppier publisher. And yet.

Wow so Trump’s speech basically means the US is turning into Iran. Young people on the streets, please be safe. Our protestors were slaughtered with no remorse over & over. This is very serious. Your government is declaring war on you & sadly they will stop at nothing to win.
This is a deeply unsafe sick country. Not because of our citizens. But our leadership. This is incredibly scary.
As much as I admire the protestors I honestly feel torn now & would beg them to stay home. This is a trap—they are going to be imprisoned or killed, those are the choices. I don’t want to see you beautiful wonderful people be the ones to lose your lives while Tr*mp & co carry on
