Black people knew that plenty of the non-Black folks who followed us for BLM would unfollow the second we became human and not just tools for their “learning journey.”

News flash: peace for our full humanity is the entire point. We’re more than what we teach you.
If you only followed Black folks to “learn” bc we posted information or anti-racist resources or spilled our personal stories of encounters with oppression, of course you’re going to be “bored” when we post our kids or our spouses or something Black as hell that you don’t get.
Imagine if people, I dunno, saw Black people as full human beings? With a full range of emotions? Who want to raise our families in peace? And celebrate milestones with joy? And don’t always have every answer and don’t always want to save your democracy?

IMAGINE THAT.
But many of y’all can’t even digest that in 240 characters.

Flattening Black people to what we do for you is an absolute perpetuation of the white supremacy you claim you hate.

That’s some white moderate behavior.

We see you.
I’m not mad, because I expected it. I’m well aware y’all love the idea of Black folks more than actual Black folks.

But if you fit the description, time to graduate from the intro course & open the textbook for Anti-racism 201: Looking in the Mirror.

Yeah. We meant you, too.
TL;DR:

This hilarious but accurate exchange is pretty much what I’m talkin bout LOL.
Too many of y’all are really just looking for a sassy Black sidekick who disappears from the screen until it’s time for us to teach you the life lesson and that’s just... not how any of this works.

I choose the discipline of hope over the ease of cynicism.
I choose fortitude over fatalism.
I choose to be who my ancestors protected and my creator formed.
I choose strategy and organizing as the container for my anger.
I choose to be more than a conqueror.

Good morning.
Note well- I didn’t say “I don’t choose to be sad/anxious/fearful.”

Your feelings are your feelings.
They’re valid.

Sadness is not cynicism, though.
We ought not conflate the two.
I feel all the feels. I have been for weeks. Months. Years. You can’t be living in and through this *waves hands* and not have them. My therapist makes me cry-talk through them.

But as I process, I choose to give my feelings a place to go that helps us heal.

I know the popular analysis is going to be “we’re screwed,” and I *feel you.*

But nah. RBG didn’t go out like that and neither are we.

I’m not speaking that, and I’m not believing that. We gon fight. That’s what we’re gonna do.
I’ll be realistic. This fight just got way harder.

But I won’t be fatalistic. Not with my ancestors blood running through my veins. H/t to @naomiosaka
.@prisonculture always says “hope is a discipline.”

I think she meant that for us, right now.

It’s #NATIONALBLACKVOTERDAY!!!

Been in kitchen cooking this up with @BET, @naturbanleague and nearly 50 brilliant Black orgs and partners across the country.

Why? Because NOTHING about us should ever be decided without US. Up and down the ballot.

Visit reclaimyour.vote!
We wanted to engage voters AND *educate* voters about voting in a pandemic & voting while Black!

You can get registered, check your registration, get your ballot & find your polling place all at reclaimyour.vote! #NationalBlackVoterDay
Among the things I’m proudest of in the campaign? Amplifying & centralizing resources from grassroots partners, like @FLRightsRestore, @LawyersComm & @BlackVotersMtr!

Returning citizens can find out *precisely* if they can and what they need to vote ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾 #NationalBlackVoterDay

I actually hope you read the article on this one. It’s not just the one day, it’s also posts abt action we can take as part of the #StopHateForProfit campaign from @ColorOfChange & @NAACP

The same campaign that did the #FacebookAdboycott and been pushing on this for years.
I get the way it looks.

But anyone who’s done organizing-digital or grassroots-knows that getting high-profile people means delivering them discrete, finite actions that are clear and can rally their followers to take action.

If you read the article, that’s their goal.
Now, if you have a *fully informed* tactical argument, that’s on you.

But I’d caution us to stop before criticizing if we a) didn’t read the article and b) aren’t doing any of our own organizing or work around hate speech and white supremacy online except complain about it.

I'm not a fan of using social justice language as a litmus test or a poker than thou competition.

BUT, as I grow, I try to learn in public. Words matter. Here is some of the language I'm working to evolve in my own practice, thanks to the insight of others smarter than me:
Replacing "developed nation" with "westernized democracy."

Why? Because "developed" is a loaded term and us often code for "white" or "capitalist."
Replacing "food desert" with "food apartheid system."

Why? Because desert implies an accidental, almost natural occurrence, when what is true is that the degree to which various communities have access to healthy food that is by design.

I hope in our righteous horror about the mass forced hysterectomies & sterilization happening in ICE facilities, that we listen closely to the disabled, Indigenous, Black & Immigrant women who have been reporting this same abuse for generations & were met w silence. #AbolishICE
Forced sterilization has been a continual and violent tool of white supremacist patriarchy.

It has been happening to BIPOC, disabled and incarcerated women for as long as America has existed.

It absolutely must end.

pbs.org/independentlen…
Also a reminder: ICE is only 17 years old.

It wouldn’t need to exist even if it was 217 years old. Still, we should remember that dismantling it is not nearly the impossible charge folks want to say it is.
