A glimpse into very coordinated and connected COVID conspiracy activity: Earlier today a paper was “published” by a group at the Rule of Law Society claiming evidence COVID was engineered in a lab. What is the Rule of Law Society? A non-profit operates by Steve Bannon
Bannon operates the non-profit with someone explicitly trying to undermine the communist Chinese government. In truth he appears to be a fraudster, like Bannon google.com/amp/s/www.wash…
The lead author of the “study” is a self-proclaimed Chinese whistle blower about COVID. Within 12 hours of this “study” being posted on repository it was being covered by conspiracy faux-news sites. Her Wikipedia page was also quickly heavily edited to include this new “study”
From there the story was quickly picked up by the New York Post. By all accounts this study is complete fantasy and conspiracy. It cites other conspiracy work am includes huge unjustified leaps in logic and glaring omissions.
At the same time it is being systematically spread online and spun into a dissident narrative by inividuals and organizations explicitly trying to discredit China, ostensibly using this conspiracy theory to do so.
I find it pretty alarming how well coordinated & funded this conspiracy work is, especially as scientific institutions struggle to reach a distrustful public & maintain their credibility. I think we should pay more attention to where this work is coming from & how they’re working
Hey @IsabelOtt would you have the more specific scientific chops than me to pick some wild stuff from this?
As an aside, she’s been interviewed over the last month for Fox News, Daily Mail, NY Post, and The Sun. All pushing the AstroTurfed narrative she is a whistleblower and a dissident
Oh and she apparently misled about her research history hku.hk/press/press-re…

Last week @dr_appie stated the current consensus in human genetics that polygenic scores can't be compared between populations. He was met with some bold claims from the race science gang about how linkage disequilibrium doesn't contribute to this problem. Let's dig into this!
Why does this matter? Well these scientific racists like to use polygenic scores to show that genetics are the cause of differences in IQ scores between European and African people, even being able to publish such faulty and inadequate studies in peer-reviewed journals.
First let's talk about how Genome-Wide Association studies (GWAS) work. GWAS try to associate DNA base-pair differences between individuals with differences in a trait. The end result is a list of associated regions of the genome & estimates of the size of the effect on the trait

Hereditarians are again saber rattling about their crap studies. This one is one published last year by a group with no relevant training or expertise that likely only got published because the anchor was editing the special issue it was published in. Problems abound!
The entire premise of the study is basically correlating genetic ancestry, calculated from some standard genomic analyses, with cognitive test results & following up with some fancier linear models that include a polygenic score for educational attainment & 2 possible confounders
They detect a correlation between ancestry and test scores and claim this is evidence of genetic cause of racial IQ differences. One problem, this is not a well supported conclusions from the results, something regularly talked about in the epidemiology literature
