The #FreeTheFlag movement is a major misunderstanding. Theres such a thing as Australian Aboriginal Culture & a flag made in 1971 is not our culture. The flag is a modern piece of artwork designed by Uncle Harold. Its not authentic traditional culture its contemporary art #auspol
Aboriginal culture is over 60,000 years old. The flag is 49 years old. I have a sibling that is older than that. Everyone of us as our culture dictates has a birthright. We have a claim to our tribal lands via our clan group which is our family group.
e.g. if I were Kaurna the traditional owners of Adelaide I would have a birthright. A claim to Kaurna land & culture. I would not have the right to claim another tribe's belongings. Which includes what they have made nor could I harass or disrespect another tribe's elder.
e.g. If I were Luritja (Harold's tribe) I still wouldn't be allowed to make demands of an elder over a piece of artwork they made. Not just art but anything even a loaf of damper. I have no right to dictate to an elder what they do with their property. Thats Aboriginal law.
None of us have any right to harass or demand artwork from Luritja elder & artist Harold Thomas. What he made in the 1970s is his work, his art not an excuse for people to attack and harass him. Which goes against Aboriginal law and culture to harass an old man and an elder.
It goes without saying for those who know Aboriginal culture. Yet a significant amount of people in this country don't. That we each have a say in our own tribes & clan. Your tribe is your region of Australia the clan groups are the families that fill that region or tribal land.
I wouldn't dare harass an interstate elder over a piece of artwork they made in 1971 or in any year & an elder from a whole other tribe! That is insane the absolute shame & disrespect. I would rather die than break such an important rule in my culture. It sickens me to see it.
Just imagine me harassing & protesting against an elder from QLD, NSW, VIC, TAS or WA over their contemporary artwork. Me making a claim to someone's grandma's painting who is from a different tribe & clan. Not in a million years. Over my dead body. Not gonna happen. No respect.
Growing up we are taught by our grandparents to show respect to all elders. My grandparents were beautiful old people from Arnhem land. Full of love and lessons for me about our culture.
I don't know what elder means to all these people attacking Harold Thomas cause they seem to think it means nothing. Or as though old people are targets for them to throw hate at. The bullying and the hate towards my uncle is probably one of the ugliest things I've ever seen.
Does greed blind people. Does an angry mob forget the person they're attacking is human has siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews & grandchildren. Has immediate & extended family has a tribe and clan. When you hate on him you spread hate on everyone of his family and community.
This fight over Uncle Harold's artwork has been one of the ugliest things I've seen done by people in the wider Aboriginal population. The negativity and hate towards a beloved & respected elder from the Northern Territory its disgusting, depressing and disheartening.
Lastly why are people extremely angry over a modern tri-coloured piece of rectangular fabric design made in 1971. They claim is "Aboriginal culture" when the authentic cultural objects are being held under lock & key in glass cabinets and basements inside Australian museums?
In Aboriginal culture we pass down our traditions from generation to generation. Its not just knowledge its also objects made by our respective tribes & clans our ancestors. Aboriginal culture is ancient it is not made of POLYESTER like the flag my uncle is being harassed over.
Our native identity does not come from polyester flags and money making business opportunities. Our Aboriginality comes from our ancestors we carry their bloodline which is represented by our totems, dreamings, family clans and tribes.
