The 4000 odd vehicles that the Gauteng government leased from Avis has divided the nation.

Why do companies opt to lease assets rather than owning them outright?

Holding all other factors constant, leasing provides a company with the following;

1) preserving cash,
2) newer assets,
3) ‘less’ operating expenses.

The above is not exhaustive.
1) preserving cash

Imagine how much it would cost to buy 4000 odd new cars every 3-5 years.

The cash outlay of buying any big asset is a lot and leasing can help an organisation to preserve this cash by paying monthly lease payments rather a huge lump sum upfront.

On occasion, Tongaat Hullet entered into arrangements whereby it provided cash collateral to assist a potential purchaser of land to finance the purchase.

In came Patrice Motsepe.
