Extraordinary how few politicians fully grasp that the only land border with the EU is in Ireland. It's as if NI is invisible to them. How to manage that border to differentiate between single market & 'independent' UK is the key, unresolved issue.
If the UK is willing to renege on a Treaty we can be pretty sure the EU won't trust Britain to not use the NI border as a 'back door' into & out of single market
Embarrassed to have to explain this.. but it seems to me that many still do not understand what the fuss is all about.

1/9. 'Growth’ the mantra of Britain’s new Labour government, is fundamental to orthodox economics & the bête noire of Greens. In an article for Carnegie Endowment Fund, I explain it is not just a flawed measure, but the wrong measure. carnegieendowment.org/research/2024/…
2. The adoption of policies for exponential ‘growth’ in the 60s marks an important stage in the development of today’s system of global economic governance, with continuous “growth” facilitated by financial deregulation and capital mobility.

This is a thread of the speech I gave to the 'Beyond Growth' conference in the European Parliament on 17th May, 2023....
Thanks are due to MEP Phillipe Lamberts, and the 20 MEPs – from all political parties, including the EPP that organised the event, and their excellent staff teams.
Thanks are also due to the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen for her support for the conference.
Her speech, and statement that the “fossil growth model is now obsolete” was in my view, highly significant.
The green movement does not have enough friends. We need to welcome all those that take steps toward us.
Listening to an old friend Vandana Shiva at #BeyondGrowth in EU Parliament.. "The ecological problem began with the colonial problem..All the land of India was turned into a commodity . 60 million died .. Colonialism was 'nature based'..." she says
Vandana criticises John Locke - on money and investment... "the currency of money that is extinguishing life.."
"88% of biodiversity is to be found on 22% of the land...under the protection of indigenous communities. Should we not be supporting them? " she asks,..
Thread: This budget represents a putsch by the undemocratic extreme right wing of the Tory Party...Truss and co have no electoral mandate.
Note: not the Plan for Growth (2013) or Build Back Better: Our Plan for Growth (2021).
The Tory Manifesto of 2019 promised: "Millions more invested every week in science, schools, apprenticeships and infrastructure while controlling debt."
