How @RoamResearch is disrupting cognition (a thread)
General intelligence = fluid intelligence + crystallized intelligence

Over the last 100 years, fluid intelligence- our ability to manipulate info, actively make links & associations b/w discrete chunks of info- has been increasing, due to improved health, access to education, etc
Meanwhile, average crystallized intelligence- our stored, internal knowledge base- has been increasing comparatively slower, bc of our almost frictionless ability to externalise it by storing & retrieving information using technology (from notebooks, the internet, databases, etc)
So our cognitions were shaped by tech once: tech shifted the demand of cognitive resources from crystallized to fluid intelligence. In recent years, we have come to increasingly value fluid intelligence in educational institutions & workplaces.
Now, roam research seems to be substituting the functions of fluid intelligence; specifically, substituting the function of forming associations b/w stored concepts & knowledge, allowing for the deeper processing of concepts, idea generation, and metacognition.
Delegating more cognitive tasks to external technology could potentially open up new avenues for thinking, reasoning, and creativity, pushing humans to the boundaries of our cognition.
The widespread adoption of metacognitive tools like roam could, pragmatically, catalyse the evolution of human cognition, and, potentially, prepare us for the forecasted intelligence explosion
