Lost: The right to peaceful assembly with women born female. As a lesbian I mourn the loss of this. Decades of lesbian festivals, discussion nights, bar events, music performances, healing weekends, all came to an end when trans 'women' demanded access and took us to court.
I've witnessed the demise of our female based culture. Carefully nurtured and sometimed painfully hard fought for. It brought women together who'd lived miserable lives as housewives and doormats, serving males in society, never asking anything for themselves, until women's../..
liberation brought isolated women together. Lesbians oppressed by religions/families found a home to meet like minded women, knowing they weren't alone. Governments and social services came on board, funding and health services became available. 1975 International Women's year.
Women gained access to birth control and sex education. Shere Hite published the Hite Report, women took control over their sexuality and work opportunities. It was the revolution that would end patriarchal control, we thought...
Men were encouraged to do their own men's business and learn about having respect for women. We after all the life givers. The future was looking bright for women. Our daughters would have choices and authentic lives, independent from how men wanted them to keep serving them.
What happened to this ground breaking liberation? How did women's spaces and lesbian culture disappear? Where can 12/13/14 year old find their sisters? Sexual abuse, rape, coercion and fashion/make up madness is back with a vengeance. Women are sexualised all over again...why?
And then court cases started, we were accused of discrimination/exclusion of transgender women. Here in Australia in 1995 and 2000. Judges sided with 'poor' transgenders effectively pushing lesbians & feminists underground. Where else could we meet without male bodies present?
That's where we've kept our cultures alive, our lost cultures that once thrived. But we can't invite women openly, it's all private and vetted now. Twenty years is a long time germinating a seed. It needs to grow and rise up. Who's joining the Third Feminist Wave? The time is NOW
