SCOOP: The lobbying voice of corporate America, the Business Roundtable, is endorsing a "market-based mechanism" to combat climate change.

It's significant that America's top CEOs are uniting around the concept of pricing carbon emissions in some way.

Keep in mind it was just a decade ago when large corporations helped sink national cap-and-trade legislation (Waxman-Markey).
The idea of a "market-based mechanism," of course, is vague. There will be disagreement on what that is, how it's designed, etc.

But for someone who began covering this issue just after Waxman-Markey, it is quite remarkable how the lobbying on carbon pricing has shifted.
That said, the politics have moved a bit, too. Five years ago, a carbon tax was seen as radical, a bridge too far. Now, even progressive Democrats are shunning it, seeing it as insufficient in scale.

@ericwolff & I covered that change in Nov 2018.

@ericwolff Climate activists have coalesced around a "standards-investment-justice" platform for climate: setting rules, massive new investment & expanding social, income & racial equity.
And if you've been reporting in D.C. long enough, as I have, you've heard plenty of energy companies say they wish they'd have taken Waxman-Markey instead of the regulations that came after.

This is Corporate America staking out a position in advance of a potential Biden WH.
