It’s lovely to see that some of do parda for your own spiritual journey. I have so much respect for you. However, let’s not forget that societal structures put an emphasis on men being the guardians of our haya. We are fighting those structures.
Do not forget that women with parda are questioned for inviting harassment, rape and violence. We are fighting these concepts. Let’s also not forget that for some of you hijab and parda is a privilege and a choice but for your other counterparts it’s not.
Relationships are give and take. I agree, but we are not talking about equal relationships when we talk about oppression. We are talking about men who police you without giving you the right to police them.
I think the hijab is an excellent example of female empowerment and demonstration of identity. However, I also understand that it can be oppressive for some and it all depends on the context. Me and you might have choice because we have privilege.
But a 9 year old girl who is forced to wear a hijab and married off in the name of parda and haya does not. The very same concepts that are only imposed on women but not men. Choice is a beautiful thing but not all of us have it. That’s your privilege, not everyone has it.
Cultural norms and codes have patriarchal roots. We are fighting those part of culture. You can love your language, your culture and your identity but still criticise the parts that are problematic. Don’t forget, like authoritarian countries, authoritarian families also exist.
