Dear Nigerians, "the system" is not the problem.
Systems are created by PEOPLE. The very people who enjoy or suffer from a system create that system by their actions and inactions.

One of the central theories in Sociology is the Behaviorist Paradigm which posits that...

...the social realities of a people are mere creations of the PREVALENT MINDSET held by the MAJORITY OF CITIZENS over time. A key scholar of this theory, Max Weber, in "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capialism" outlined how the theology of the likes ofJohn Calvin...

...in North&West Europe UNCONSCIOUSLY gave birth to modern capitalism. The doctrine of "predestination" taught not only eternal salvation but also that one's station in life was predetermined. People were taught to take pride in their work and status as worship to God...

...which is why many took their craft as their family names (Hunter, Taylor, Shumacher [Shoemaker] etc) and started sayings like "Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift to God". This brought about specialization - and increased incomes. However...

...the message also put forth moderation; God is not pleased with excess and hedonism. So incomes were increasing, but spending wasn't. This was a major reason for financial prosperity and why Calvin's residence of Switzerland became the banking mecca of the world. It was a...

...its direction. While there are many critics of Weber and the behaviorist theory in general, I side with this paradigm. And as I have studied Nigeria for the better part of 2 decades, I have always viewed our problems in the light of cause and effect...
8/...Why are we so energetic but averse to forward growth?
Why do we place priority on community but shun civic participation and elections?
Why do we think "one man" will change Nigeria?

I have some theories and will be sharing them in the build up to #NigeriaAt60

The biggest tragedy isn't that insecurity is rife and human life is treated like poultry.
It isn't that the economy is in shambles. Or that nepotism, ethnocentricism and cronyism are offical policy.
The tragedy is much worse...

A thread.

The tragedy is that we think it just started "today" or when the current culprits came to the fore.

The tragedy is we REFUSE to see that as a PEOPLE we have lied, ignored and enabled folly to this point. We embraced prejudice and applauded thieves.
2/

So many participated in cheering thieves and murderers because they were their "brothers" or because they enjoyed crumbs from their tables
