“England and the U.S. started the eugenics movement, not Nazi Germany,” said Elspeth Wilson, an assistant prof. of government at Franklin & Marshall College. “After WWII and the Holocaust, the United States doesn’t even acknowledge our eugenics past.”
The recent allegations call to mind a history of sterilization laws in the U.S. dating back to the early 1900s that usually targeted the poor, disabled and women of color.
As many as 70,000 Americans were forcibly sterilized during the 20th century.
