The @PowerCoEJ, @NAACP_LDF and the Louisiana Conference of the @NAACP got a pretty significant victory from U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick today.
The plaintiffs didn't get everything they wanted. There will be no extension to the early voting period, but people worried about getting sick or passing on the novel coronavirus to loved ones won't be forced to vote in person.
Judge Dick said it made no sense for @Louisiana_sos and @AGJeffLandry to argue that COVID-19 was not a significant enough burden to require emergency election rules when they established an emergency rule but just for those infected with COVID-19.
@Louisiana_sos and @AGJeffLandry evidence that allowing more folks to vote absentee will lead to voter fraud is "woefully inadequate" Judge Dick rules.
How can the state credibly argue that allowing people to vote absentee out of convenience doesn't encourage fraud but allowing people to vote absentee to avoid illness does? Judge Dick: "It cannot."
Correction: There is a bit of an extension of in-person early voting (from 7 days to 10) but not to the 13 sought by plaintiffs.
