Fact-checking President Trump's ABC town hall claims on coronavirus, Joe Biden bit.ly/32Bd0Uj THREAD: Image
Trump deflected criticism of how he has handled the pandemic. Even as the death toll — about 200,000 — moves toward the higher end of initial forecasts, Trump said he took strong steps to stem the spread of the disease.
When ABC host George Stephanopulous asked him why he hadn’t yet put forward a replacement plan with protections in place, Trump said, "I have it all ready." He has promised this before, it has not emerged: politifact.com/article/2020/a… @KHNews
Trump: "We have 20% of the cases because of the fact that we do much more testing. If we wouldn’t do testing, you wouldn’t have cases. You would have very few cases."

This is wrong. Testing reveals cases if they are there to be found. politifact.com/factchecks/202…
Trump: "I didn’t say one way or the other" that Chinese President Xi Jinping was doing a good job handling the new coronavirus.

This is false. Trump said Feb. 23 that Xi "is doing a very good job."

Trump: "Joe Biden said I was xenophobic because I put the ban on, and I thought that was a very unfair, and by the way he’s totally taken that back."

It’s Mostly False that Biden called him xenophobic for issuing a travel ban politifact.com/article/2020/a…
and it’s False that Biden has "taken that back" since Biden did not explicitly called the travel restrictions xenophobic. politifact.com/factchecks/202…
"We were short on ventilators because the cupboards were bare when we took it over."
Mostly False: politifact.com/factchecks/202…

In April, during the first few months of the pandemic, we found that most states had procured enough ventilators to match the demand.
Trump on ABC: Democrats "will get rid of preexisting conditions" protections.
Pants on Fire! Biden wants to keep the Affordable Care Act and its protections for people with preexisting conditions.

Trump, speaking of Biden, said "If you look at his policies, where he wants to raise everybody’s taxes."

That's False: Biden’s tax plan would raise taxes on corporations and people making over $400,000 a year.
That's not a formal tax increase: bit.ly/2QXChBE

We don’t use the word “lie” lightly at PolitiFact. Our Lie of the Year looks back at the most significant falsehood that tried to undermine truth in 2023.

The 2023 Lie of the Year goes to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s campaign of conspiracy theories. (1/9) PolitiFact Lie of the Year, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Campaign of Conspiracy Theories (Image of RFK Jr.'s face on a beige background, trophy with flames next to the PolitiFact logo)
Pundits and politicos have debated if Kennedy's presidential campaign will factor into the outcome of the 2024 election.

But what's clear is that Kennedy’s political following is built on a movement that seeks to legitimize conspiracy theories. (2/9) bit.ly/3tymIqH
As an independent candidate, Kennedy has made repeated false and debunked claims about vaccines and COVID-19. He aired conspiracy theories about the assassinations of his father, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and his uncle, President John F. Kennedy. (3/9) politifact.com/factchecks/202…

THREAD: We have been tracking Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ policy promises from his campaign in 2018. Here’s where his promises stand on the environment, teacher salaries, health care costs, and more: politifact.com/florida/promis… Image
When he ran for governor, Ron DeSantis pledged to protect and enhance Florida’s air quality. Although he didn't institute clean air policies immediately, metrics suggest air quality has improved. We rated this promise a Compromise. bit.ly/3FwWhpa
DeSantis said he’d advocate to broaden access to mental health and substance abuse treatment in Florida. He put money behind these initiatives and we rated this promise Kept. bit.ly/3zv4EO7

Trump sent a letter to the Jan. 6 committee saying 2020 was “rigged and stolen.” Trump’s own advisers added to the evidence that the election wasn’t stolen, including Attorney General Bill Barr who told Trump his statements were “bull----.”

Trump sent a letter to the Jan. 6 committee saying 2020 was “rigged and stolen.” Trump said even before the election that rigging would be the only way Dems would win. Pants on Fire! politifact.com/factchecks/202…
A conspiracy to rig an election would require thousands of people conspiring across multiple jurisdictions to commit felonies. There’s no evidence it happened. politifact.com/factchecks/202…

New: For decades, the word “grooming” has been associated with child sexual abuse.

Now, it has become used to imply members of the LGBTQ community deliberately prey on children by discussing sexual orientation and gender identity. politifact.com/article/2022/m…
Exposure to these topics “does not change the way people develop,” said the University of Minnesota’s Jenifer McGuire, who studies family relationships and gender identity and the health of transgender youth.
“It changes how they feel about how they develop,” McGuire said. “Accepting parents don’t change whether or not their kid is trans — they change whether or not their kid hates themselves and gets kicked out of the house for being trans. The kid’s transness is there regardless.”
