No matter the inflated bullshit cost of adding a disc drive to your next gen system, you should not buy a digital only console. You will spend more money long term.

Allow me to illustrate very simply, why.
bonus and probably the most fucking eye-watering example
this got somehow even more pertinent about five seconds after tweeting it since publishers are now trying to push $70 for new games.
"why not wait for a digital sale"

why not just buy a disc that's cheap without waiting for a time limited and entirely unguaranteed to happen sale?

if you wanna buy digital because you prefer it, by all means but you are factually going to spend more money doing so

you know, if you're like me and you have occasionally wondered what the terms are for publishing a game on console but find your efforts stymied because everyone makes developers sign NDAs.

Wonder no more! The Epic vs Apple lawsuit resulted in all of the licenses being public
like it's one of those things that is probably fairly boilerplate but is still completely inaccessible to anyone not on the inside because of how highly secretive games companies are about it for no well justified reason.

the courts would agree! so now you can just, read it.
courtlistener.com/docket/1744239…

for instance, here is Nintendo's.

there's still a lot of fucking redacting in this one for probably boring reasons but huge chunks of this are generally not accessible at all unless you sign the relevant developer NDA.

ZUN basically wrote a game about how the world and his own view of doujinsoft distribution has changed, the pandemic and subsequent lockdown almost certainly speeding that along. It's somewhat fitting that the first Touhou game to debut on Steam has that kind of story
In Touhou canon, residents of Gensokyo are beings that manifest concepts that the "outside world" no longer believes in. Tenkyuu Chimata, the new final boss, is a "god of special marketplaces". Not generically "commerce" or "selling". "Special markets". Y'know. Like Comiket?
i know this naturally gets overlooked a lot due to language barrier and "woah dodge the bullet" but touhou games have intelligent things to say if you realise you can engage with them on the level of metaphor. ZUN's games always very much reflect his thoughts and feelings.

i have mixed feelings about "support streamers even if they're playing something different" because yes I would like that. but it's also very plain and obvious that I can't just point blank demand people watch a game they absolutely do not care about.
like I do get it, I use the website myself, you would have difficulty paying me to watch even the few people I do follow play like, a mario game or something.
but at the same time there's a difficulty in trying to introduce newer or lesser known games to the mix when it's very far out of your usual wheelhouse. let alone the sorts who watch exclusively for one game/genre. It's tough, you have to sell a new game to your audience.

you know for a "complete edition" of Scott Pilgrim, it's a pretty low effort port job since it's just the final patch of the 360/PS3 with no alterations

on the one hand, the skips still live. on the other, this means that shit that got broke in that patch are still broke
"like what"

there's meant to be a congratulatory artwork upon beating the game with a "Thanks For Playing" message. Either they took it out on purpose for some inscrutable reason or it just broke in the final patch because it blackscreens on Complete Edition
wallace was the final character addition and he was completely screwed across the board. besides being a rushed copycat of Stephen who initially had animations stolen from Sonic Battle, they don't seem to have taken any time to fix some of his more obviously broken animation

For anyone who might not know, Bleem was an emulator that allowed PS1 games to run on PC and Dreamcast (yeah, really).

Sony, naturally, sued the hell out of them. But what might surprise you is that despite multiple lawsuits, Sony didn't win a single fuckin' one of them.
Judges ruled that Bleem's software to make playstation games run on non-sony hardware did not constitute "unfair competition" and was protected under Fair Use, along with their use of game screenshots on packaging.

This sets the legal precedent for emulation to this day.
Bleem did not distribute actual games, you still needed the disc, that was the legal precedent the operated under, and judges concurred with them.

hell bleem actually includes the PS1 BIOS in the software and they still won.
