My "Hackers" 25th Anniversary story: I saw it in a studio big-city screening room with professional movie critics, as the guest of a friend. I had some...um..."practical experience"...with the subject and culture. So I struggled to stifle laughter and MST3K-style comments. (1/?)
But I was JUST old and mature enough to recognize that this was a professional environment and any misbehavior would reflect poorly on my friend. So I was silent. We grabbed lunch right afterward. That's when I opened the floodgates. (2/?)
Amidst laughter and bites of a chicken club sandwich, I mocked the whole thing. The characters' attempts at "hakspeek," the culture, even the fact that the dude crowdsurfed and nobody stole his alpha pager. BUT THEIR HACKS, OMG HOW LAME! (3/?)
I was really on a roll (and, yes, full of myself) so I walked my friend through how most of the crew's techniques would have totally gotten them caught/couldn't possibly have worked/were WAY more complicated than they had to be. (4/?)
So point by point, I explained how to REALLY do all that stuff. And I went further, explaining how they could have done it invisibly, or done far, FAR worse. Eventually, I recognized that my friend had stopped eating and I sounded like Jeffrey Dahmer critiquing "Seven." (5/6)
I think my friend took it all in good humor. Looking back, it makes me recognize that "Hackers" got at least ONE thing right: lots of people in that culture in the 90s were arrogant *****s with very poor social radar. :) (6/6)

After last night's murders in Colorado Springz, I want to encourage you to BE the family member who "ruined Thanksgiving for everybody." (1/?)
BE the one at the family get-together who called a racist uncle "a total bag of ****."

BE the one who interrupted your sister's rant about "the agenda against the traditional family" to say "There's no such thing, and you're a ****ing moron for even thinking there is." (2/?)
BE the one who, after Grampa Jake repeats some piece of Fox News bull about stolen elections, says "All of that has been proven to not be true. You're just a total goddamn idiot, and billionaires are laughing at you." (3/?)

A few details from my Q&A with Apple about the iPhone 14 and Pro yesterday: (1/?)

1) Satellite Emergency SOS works at any battery level where you'd expect regular messaging to work. There's no special minimum required. And yes, communications with emergency services is two-way.
2) Dynamic Island: there's no always-on outline of black pixels around the camera cutout to sell the effect. When it expands, special antialiasing makes the border of the UI element look as crisp as the physical cutout's edges. (2/?)
2a) Got the impression that Apple designed Dynamic Island for iOS APIs and not for third-party apps directly; IE, 3PAs get the function "for free" when they use an API wired up to use it (like AVKit) as opposed to specifically trying to do something on its own. (3/?)

Updated my MacBook and iPad Pro for Universal Control tonight. I'm liking it so much that I'm forcing myself to leave my desk and go to bed. I'm too excited about doing an actual work session with this setup and I _probably_ shouldn't stay up until 7 AM on a weeknight. But: (1/?)
1) Very impressed with how much "it just works." Though I've only tried it with a vanilla-as-hell setup. I'll bring the pain tomorrow.

2) Setup is easy and then it's easy to connect/disconnect. UI treats it as just another element of Display settings, even through menubar. (2/?)
3) Yup, you just move the mouse off the edge of one screen and it fluidly moves into the next, no pauses or stutters.

4) Clipboard is shared between devices. Command-C on one screen, Command-V on the other.

5) Altogether it feels like a 100% seamless single workspace. (3/?)

I'm very pleased and optimistic about Apple's acquisition of Primephonic. Classical music is idiosyncratic and absolutely requires a bespoke streaming experience. Apple acquires the whole catalog and promises a custom app and experience for classical.

apple.com/newsroom/2021/…
Mainstream platforms are usually disappointing. "We've _loads_ of opera...we've got 'Nessun Dorma' by the Three Tenors _and_ that little girl from 'America's Got Talent'! Here's some 70s soft-rock that our algorithm thinks people who search for opera would rather listen to..."
Well, maybe not _that_ bad. But many of the greats record for labels that don't have streaming distribution, or aren't even given a chance to record at all. And much of the best stuff ever recorded is locked up on an opera company's servers with no plans for distribution.

Pitch for a reality show:

Cast 12 bakers for a knockoff of "Great British Bake-Off." They enter the tent for the first time and discover that they'll _actually_ be competing in a knockoff of "Great Pottery Throw-Down." Across town,12 potters encounter similar confusion.
Each baker-potter has been paired with a potter-baker. They never meet, BUT they're allowed to Facetime each other from their respective sets to ask for advice on how the _hell_ to complete this week's challenge.
I envision a final in which the pairs work together and meet for the first time. The potter-who's-learned-baking creates a magnificent cake, which will be presented and served on a cake stand and plates produced by the baker-who's-learned-pottery.

A few things helped to cure me of my bad attitude towards comic book creative runs I don't like:

1) Accepting that the writer isn't obligated to please _me,_ specifically

2) Learning to be happy for the many many other fans who seem to be enjoying it

but mostly

3) Turning 15.
To clarify: I still insist that the way [A-list writer] handled [B-list character] was so inept and unprofessional that any writer would be justified to retcon every bit of it, and [recent-ish event] is objectively among the worst comics in history. But overall? *shrug*
Bottom line: a member of an audience is 100% entitled to like or not like something. They're also entitled to express their opinion. When they cap it off with any articulation of the thought "…now, I demand JUSTICE!" yeah they've overslept and missed the bus to Rational Town.
