@obsdmd is an INCREDIBLE note-taking tool for developing your “second brain”. Similar to @RoamResearch but better in important ways (I’ll explain). It took me a few hours working with it to really grasp the magnitude of this concept. This will be my first ever thread 👇🏼
Let’s be real. We’re exposed to data at a volume & velocity that is totally unprecedented. Our monkey brains don’t stand a chance. We need better. After all, in a world of increasing complexity, knowledge is power.

No that’s not cool. Whether it’s digital or IRL, keeping notes the traditional way SUCKS because of inherent information hierarchy. Content is trapped on that page, siloed in that journal. That’s not how brains work... we need a NETWORK.
Aka “knowledge graph”. A system of representing information as a system of interconnected nodes. kinda like neurons in the brain. NOW WE’RE TALKIN. This is a far superior way of keeping notes. You don’t need to know in advance how everything will fit together
A life-long learner, dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge may accumulate HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of interwoven notes, representing thousands of hours of data entry. This adds up to an EXTREME reliance on this knowledge graph.
🧐 We must take GREAT CARE.
Selecting the wrong technology to play host to your 2nd brain has grave consequences. This is where the difference btwn @obsdmd and @RoamResearch comes in. They’re both incredible harbingers of the 2nd brain concept, but @obsdmd set themselves apart:
🤓 Locally stored markdown files.
DO you REALLY want your 2nd brain live on someone else’s property in a remote location? Businesses can shut down, services can be cancelled, programs can malfunction. We want to select a service that keeps maintains max optionality, max control.
😌 I’m not saying you shouldn’t backup your data to a remote server - of course you should - just that, when building your 2nd brain, you’ll want to maintain control over the decision regarding where that data lives and how it is accessed. That’s what @obsdmd let’s you do.
We will continue to rely more and more on technology to supplement our brains. Roam & Obsidian are at one of the frontlines of this. By centering itself around a stable format (markdown), and offering greater control over data storage, @obsdmd is the wiser choice
By choosing markdown & local storage, @obsdmd also makes it’s functionality extremely open to community built plugins. You can make build your own software on top of your 2nd brain without any limitations. this is perhaps the strongest case of all.
Curious to hear thoughts on this from @Austen @jmj @sharifshameem @awilkinson @eriktorenberg
