folks, i'm a glass half full kinda guy, so when one of my projects goes down like a bad metaphor, i try to make it into a teachable moment by sharing with you how i sold the project and what the script was that i ultimately delivered. it's part of my mentorship!
if in the last three years you have heard me talk about "fish monks from outer space" then you know that this pilot - an original sci-fi concept called "skyborn" - was the closest thing to my soul since "the middleman."
sadly, after selling it to universal for the syfy channel - and then redeveloping for the peacock streaming service, skyborn was put into turnaround due to the economic stress of the pandemic (it's a BIG, world-building show).
"skyborn" has been shopped around, but there have been no takers... the project is, sadly, soul crushingly, dead.
if you are a fledgling writer, or a fan, and want to know what a pitch, pitch deck, and pilot for a completely new sci-fi IP that was actually sold to a network looks like, just go to my downloads page and check out the pitch and pilot script for SKYBORN.

howdy boys and girls, let me tell you a crime story that just happened to me...
this afternoon, my wife came to my home office looking unsettled - she was fielding a telephone call from a person who claimed that our daughter's caregiver and her daughter had been in a car accident...
my wife gave me the phone because she had heard screaming in spanish on the line and it being my native language, she felt i would be able to handle the conversation more efficiently.

it’s staffing season, and, as is the case every year, many of us are experiencing what could be charitable referred to as “anxiety” - and all of it is made worse by the uncertainties of repnarok.
all the complexities of that taken into consideration, there are other things to think about - staffing is truly year round now, shows area being developed and released at all times by more outlets than ever: there are more jobs for tv writers now than there have ever been.
(back in the bad old days of four networks and no streaming or cable - and by that i mean “the nineties” - you literally could count on the fact that if you didn’t have a job by the first week of june you were pretty much fucked for the next twelve months)

members of the @WGAWest. i may not be staffing a show, but i am a senior level writer/producer, and all of us need us to step up, regardless of how the negotiations go. so here’s what i am going to do, for the foreseeable future - i call it the #wgasolidaritychallenge.
every week, i am going to read one lower level (staff-writer to co-producer) writer - the requirements:

- the writer has to have (or had) agency/manager reps
- the writer has to be a member of the @WGAWest
- the writer has to have staffed on a past or current show
if i respond to that writers work, i will serve as either a reference - like if you are being pitched/considered somewhere, you can say “javi read and liked me!” - or i will mention the writer to showrunners whom i know are staffing.

just read a story about 58,000 fake negative reviews for captain marvel on rotten tomatoes planted by sexist trolls.
i can’t begin to quantify my disgust. this kind of shit fills my throat with black bile.
not merely because of the repugnant sexism, misogyny, cruelty, and waste of short, beautiful life something like this represents.

let’s say for a moment that i am a billionaire. i am an intelligent person with a top flight education. i believe that i got to where i am through hard work, and because of my libertarian streak, i espouse that free markets could make anyone like me...
... of course, that is if the competition can outwit my competitive instinct to crush them. i didn’t get to where i am by running a charity. i believe in social darwinism. while i won’t call it white supremacy, there are those among us smarter and more capable than others.
because i am a billionaire, i have access to all the latest intel, and even though i have my suspicions about academics - with their constant asking for grants - it’s pretty clear that climate change is coming... more importantly, climate change will be good for business.

america first unless it’s the america that includes puerto rico.
tax cuts and free enterprise unless they benefit the poor and middle class.
pro life unless it’s the lives of the uninsured.
