Capitalism is inherently & systematically:
• Anti-democratic
• Environmentally destructive
• Inequitable
• Creativity & innovation stifling
• Heartlessness & callousness incentivizing

We will PROVE each & every one of these claims & EXPOSE common capitalist propaganda. 1/22
Democracy means people have a fair say in the decisions that affect their lives. 2/22

In this thread, we prove that capitalism is inherently anti-democratic both *internally* within capitalist workplaces, as well as *externally* via markets.

Capitalism does NOT give people a fair say in the economic decisions that affect their lives. 3/22

Engaging, participating & applying ourselves in the decisions that affect our lives is a source of fulfillment.

Capitalism's institutional anti-democratic & authoritarian structure denies this fulfillment for the working-class, leading to alienation. 4/22
A large part of why capitalism is so environmentally destructive is precisely because it is anti-democratic.

Markets exclude EVERYONE affected by transactions other than the immediate buyer & seller. Thus, everyone effected by environmental damage has no say in the matter. 5/22
In this thread, we PROVE – using standard economic models – that capitalism is inherently & systematically environmentally destructive precisely because markets are inherently & systematically undemocratic. 6/22

Capitalist propaganda claims that markets are inherently efficient when the truth is the exact opposite.

In this thread, we debunk the 5 biggest lies regarding economic efficiency & present models that prove exactly why capitalism in so destructive. 7/22

Not only do markets *incentivize* the destruction of the environment, but their inherent incentivization of externalities means that they *incentivize* the destruction of EVERYTHING THAT MATTERS at the expense of profit maximization, proven here: 8/22
We should demand of our economy to be fair & equitable; that EVERYONE should be fairly & equitably remunerated for their effort, sacrifice & time working towards societally valued work. 9/22

But capitalism is incapable of fair & equitable wages because in capitalism, labor is bought & sold on a market system & market prices are reflective of the relative bargaining power between the buyer & seller.

Capitalism is inherently inequitable: 10/22
In this thread, we show just how incredibly inequitable wages are here in the US.

Rewarding bargaining power means rewarding the already rich & powerful - basically, what people have known all along: the rich get richer, while the poor get poorer. 11/22

Here we show that if wages were remotely equitable, the average worker, working the average duration, expending the average effort at an average job would receive the average income of roughly $130,000 per year! 12/22
Besides robbing workers of equitable wages, the extreme discrepancies of wealth systematically perpetuated by capitalism (because if it’s inherent rewarding of bargaining power) causes other problems, explored in this thread: 13/22

But it’s not just equitable wages that are robbed from the working-class.

Alienating & undemocratic workplaces that relegate 80% of the workforce to have no say in any decisions also systematically robs the working-class of their creative & innovative potentials. 14/22
In this thread, we prove that capitalism stifles creativity & innovation in MANY different ways, including by creating an environment that *incentivizes* hoarding & keeping-secret information, knowledge & discoveries - impeding progress. 15/22

Capitalism rewards & incentivizes the worst of humanity.

It literally rewards psychopathic & sociopathic behavior while punishing empathy & callousness. 16/22
Capitalist propaganda assumes a fantasy that capitalism tends towards a magical equilibrium that not only is compatible with human nature, but that brings about our best.

It’s all a lie. As shown in this thread (& sub-threads): 17/22
Capitalist commodification creeps into EVERY aspect of our lives, and everything it touches is distorted at the altar of profit-maximization.

In this thread, for example, we explore how capitalism even distorts our sexuality from a young age: 18/22
Capitalist atomization has broken much of our natural bonds of kinship, community & culture. And even the bonds that remain, like social media, are commodified & distort our natural tendencies. 19/22
Capitalism not only perpetuates but also EXACERBATES authoritarianism, racism & sexism, as explored in this thread: 20/22

Okay, so capitalism sucks. It’s undemocratic, inequitable, & environmentally destructive. It rewards the worst of humanity while punishing the best. It stifles creativity & innovation & distorts, oppresses & alienates the vast majority. So what is the alternative? 21/22
We should demand better from our economy. We should want an economy that reflects our shared values – not one that inherently & systematically destroys them.

What might a participatory democratic, equitable, sustainable, socialist economy look like? 22/22
participatoryeconomics.info
Yikes typo in #16/22!: It should say 'punishing empathy & compassion'. 16/22

Leftists want a fair, democratic & sustainable economy.

Capitalism inherently & systematically delivers the opposite.

If your long-term vision doesn’t include replacing capitalism with something better, either you’re not a leftist or you don’t understand capitalism. 1/9
Wages are our claim to our share of our collective economic efforts.

A good economy would provide equitable wages rewarding us for effort, sacrifice or duration of work.

Capitalism doesn’t do any of those things. 2/9

Capitalism systematically rewards bargaining power, leading to massive inequities: Poverty vis-à-vis extreme wealth.

No one works 100x 1,000x or 10,000 times longer or harder than anyone else, yet we have income disparities even greater than that. 3/9

I’m super excited to announce some HUGE professional news:

I have joined the Biden/Harris administration as Director of the Radical Left Agenda and will be leading the transition to a Radical Left Economy.

Let’s get to work! 1/33
I’m kidding, of course, because the Biden/Harris administration is not remotely radical left.

But since so many seem confused on what a Radical Left economic agenda might actually look like here’s exactly what I would do if I were to lead such an effort 2/33
The first flaw of capitalism is that it is inherently anti-democratic.

Workplaces make decisions that affect workers, communities & even the entire planet. But capitalist workplaces are top-down enterprises where only a tiny handful have all the say. 3/33

How might the Left overcome self-defeating infighting & endless strategy disputes and instead start building the type of solidarity necessary to win a radically better world?

Left Solidarity in a Hostile World 1/30
There is little disagreement on both the importance & urgency of the systemic changes we desperately need.

We are facing grim challenges on multiple fronts:

Capitalism’s systemic ecological destruction, injustices & alienation 2/30
Pervasive institutional racism systematically under-develops & under-nurtures communities of color. From systemic underfunding of schools to environmental racism, from economic injustice to the racist criminal “justice” system. 3/30

The current split we’re seeing in the Republican Party is not a sudden split of ‘consciousness’ or ‘doing what’s right’, but rather a split between two factions of their billionaire donors: Langone et al. vs. Mercers et al. 1/14
Policy-wise, these two groups agree on nearly everything, but there is a rift in strategy. One group funds & supports conspiracy theories, right-wing & white-supremacist extremist groups, etc.

They do so for two primary reasons: 2/14
First, people’s lives are in turmoil. Millions are food and housing insecure. Capitalist alienation & atomization is rampant. Our political system represents corporate interests & the 1% - leaving crumbs for everyone else. People are hurting. 3/14

The economic & humanitarian crisis we are living through right now was 100% entirely avoidable.

It’s just that Wall Street, large corporations, the 1%, and the political duopoly they control simply don’t give a shit about you. 1/5
What we needed:
• A comprehensive *bottom-up* stimulus of approx. 40% of GDP
• Rent & mortgage freezes
• $2k/mo to keep people home & safe
• M4A

What we got:
• Trillions for the 1%
• Crumbs for the 99%
• Cronyism / corruption 2/5
They quickly & decisively bailed themselves out with trillions in handouts while leaving the vast majority of the population with crumbs.

Meanwhile, every month without a real stimulus, millions more families are becoming food & housing insecure. 3/5

After 4 years of a belligerent racist, sexist, authoritarian President - supported by millions, what lessons can we on the Left draw?

And how do we continue to organize for the radical transformations we seek within a society so deeply entrenched in racism & sexism? 1/18
First, it’s incredible how so many people’s entire narrative of this country completely changes based on if enough voter suppression or ballot purging changes the result of an election between two people who are both ‘widely disliked.’

It's worth examining.. 2/18
Trump would never have been elected president in 2016 if the GOP had not gotten away with purging so many Black & Brown voters. 3/18
