As a Jewish member of the Labour Party I thank @Keir_Starmer for his New Year message, but his claim that he has "been... establishing new ties right across the Jewish community and its organisations" is simply untrue. jewishnews.timesofisrael.com/sir-keir-starm… via @JewishNewsUK
I wrote to him personally in early April urging him to do so. My letter was ignored for 2.5 months. After reminding him about it I got a brief "one size fits all" form letter from his office staff which answered none of my nine specific questions or requests. I wrote back to say
I was "disappointed, angry, insulted and patronised" to receive this form letter” and pointed to 4 of the 9 specific questions I especially wanted answers to. His office staff wrote back: "please accept my apologies that you are unhappy with the response." And that was that.

"The spirit of Israeli fascism has reached Amsterdam" wrote Ofer Kassif, the left wing Israeli MP, describing the racist provocation, rampaging, tearing up Palestinian flags by Macabbi Tel Aviv fans there, that met a violent response. He condemned all the violence. 1/4
Today we ought to be remembering the anniversary of Kristallnacht (Pogromnacht) of 1938 and thinking how to stop the advance of the racist, fascist Far Right in many countries. The Israeli far right is absolutely part of the problem. 2/4
Zionism occupies, oppresses and murders Palestinians with the shameful collusion of Western politicians and media. With fascist politicians ensconced In Israel's government, Zionism causes great harm to Jewish communities, Jewish history and Jewish identity too. 3/4
Sound points on the Jewish Chronicle scandal yesterday by @KeithKahnHarris who said it’s obsessive attention to Israel and antisemitism meant it failed to cover many other aspects of Jewish life. But we also need to keep the output of this trivial paper in perspective. 1/7
Under the previous editor, Pollard, its print circulation went down from 80,000 copies to around 20,000, of which a third were given away free. I don’t reckon that the current editor’s puerile far-rightish sensationalism has revived sales that much. 2/7
Pollard, who came to the JC from the immigrant-baiting Daily Express, made deliberately ridiculous claims that the antiracist, antifascist @jeremycorbyn was “an existential threat to Jewish life”. This lie was repeated in mainstream media for entirely cynical reasons. 3/7
Many Labour MPs are unhappy about being told to vote for cuts to winter fuel payments - a decision not made by them but by just 2 Labour members - Starmer+ Reeves. MPs fear losing the whip but if good numbers rebel, Starmer will not want to add to the ranks of independents. 1/7
If they need courage to stir them to action they should recall the example given by Labour councillors in Poplar, east London in this month just over 100 years ago. In September 1921, 30 of them (25 men, 5 women) were imprisoned after leading a rates revolt locally. 2/7
They refused to impose an additional rates demand on their largely impoverished constituents to fund cross-London services. They knew that the funding formula meant it would hit the residents of poorer boroughs much more than the residents of richer boroughs. 3/7
Undecided voters in ISLINGTON NORTH: It’s a 2-horse race @jeremycorbyn, MP since 1983, standing as an INDEPENDENT versus Praful Nargund, the candidate imposed by the Labour Party nationally on local members. A vote for either of them is the only way to affect the result. 1/7
Votes for other candidates in Isl. North can't affect the outcome. The Green Party has cllrs in Islington. I voted Green at mayoral/GLA elections. Corbyn strongly promotes the Green New Deal. Local Greens will find a powerful green voice in Islington North by voting Corbyn. 2/7
Corbyn knows every street+has championed every progressive struggle locally. By saving individuals from destitution and deportation, he has literally saved lives. Corbyn is acutely aware of the key local issues of health, housing, and job insecurity. 3/7
Thread: The Holocaust was a product of fascism, "race" hatred, ultra-nationalism, dehumanisation. Today, when more Jews globally question+challenge Zionism than at any time since 1948 + Israel's government includes self-declared fascists, Fraser's statement is peculiar. 1/7
In a brilliant 1983 essay, the Israeli writer Boaz Evron said the 2 tragedies Jews suffered in the 20th century were "the Holocaust – and the (nationalist+mystical) lessons drawn from it", which fuel an ideology where all who challenge Zionism are seen as antisemites. 2/7
On gov't orders, Israel's military continues occupation, ethnic cleansing, and, in Gaza, carpet-bombing Palestinian civilians+destruction of infrastructure that sustains life. And they cynically use the Nazis' destruction of Jewish life in Europe as a false "justification". 3/7
After Israel's government declared war in response to Hamas massacre 7 October, it moved swiftly to ban anti-war protests within Israel. But the authorities could not sustain that. Protests have taken place but have faced violence from the police and far-right activists. 1/6
They continue to grow as the death toll rises massively in Gaza, and pogroms continue in the West Bank. At the end of December protests took place within Israel at several locations. In Tel Aviv crowds were chanting "Bibi, Bibi, you can't hide, you're committing genocide." 2/6
That is very significant today as IJC hearings begin in the Hague where the South African Gov't is bringing a case of genocide against the Israeli gov't. Jews in several countries who have taken to the streets to protest against the war will wish them well in this effort. 3/6
