i wrote a comprehensive analysis on how paranoia, pseudoscience, and moral panics became entwined with american culture throughout history, resulting in online misinformation, extremism, and viral ideological conspiracy theories like QAnon today
i spent over 200 hours the past 4 months researching and writing this 15,000 word piece. the goal was to create a comprehensive history and mapping of the most prominent factors contributing to conspiracy theory culture in america (and online) today
i wanted to deep dive way more factors for this piece, such as digital manipulation, corporate/government propaganda, global conspiracy theories, the origins of secret societies, and gun culture, but any longer and it would've been a book. maybe someday!
special thanks to @Doug_Muller and @joecacola for editing the shit out of this article. they helped me get it down from 18,000 to 15,000 words! and s/o to @Steve_Kowalick and @zashley for the feedback as well. i really hope it's helpful for some people
The “15-Minute City” concept is popularizing around the world and simultaneously becoming a culture war issue. There’s a lot of confusion about what it is and how cities build them in practice. Do they restrict or promote people’s freedom of movement? Let's break it down. THREAD
A 15-Minute City is one where residents are free to access most or all needs like stores, parks, restaurants, and schools within a 15-minute walk or bike ride, so they don't need a car to live. They can also be referred to as “20-Minute Neighborhoods” or “Complete Neighborhoods.”
The ideas behind 15-Minute Cities have been around since the 1920’s, but the phrase itself was coined by French urbanist Carlos Moreno in 2016. It gained popularity in 2020 when Paris mayor Annie Hidalgo adopted it as an election campaign promise to redesign Paris streets.
This is what a walkable, sustainable, and productive place looks like. To build this in America, we need to ban minimum lot size mandates, parking mandates, and density restrictions, then legalize and incentivize the development of mixed-use, multifamily housing for everyone
Urban3 has performed hundreds of case studies that consistently show dense urban areas generate more tax revenue than their sprawling suburban counterparts. Rather than building cities around commuting cars, we should rebuild them around local residents!
Yeah, because this environmentally sustainable, economically productive, mixed-use urbanism is illegal to build in 99% of the country. These are destinations where people want to live — they should be legalized and affordable for all!
social media has broken some people’s brains into thinking they need to follow and have a take on every major event 24/7. this has never been the case in all of human history until recently for a select number of information addicts who can't log off
some thoughts to consider:
if you're a reporter, researcher, someone impacted by an event, or someone supporting a cause related to it, then following along, sharing resources, and rallying people makes sense. if you have no reason to follow outside hobbyism, media addiction, or ego, it's ok to log off
posting alone isn’t activism. it just makes us feel validated. which is... fine on its own, but gets weird during global crisis' when it's framed like a necessary pubic service or legitimate way to process things. we get rewarded when we post—it's important to acknowledge that
i wrote about the differences between socialists, social democrats, social liberals, neoliberals, and the like to help get people closer to a universal understanding of what makes a liberal versus a leftist on the political spectrum
most people politically label themselves (and others) based on ethos. it's the views they emphasize or omit—their rhetoric, funding, following, associations, etc. it's their vibes. this is much easier than determining intent or analyzing policy positions
liberals and leftists trying to own each other in the middle of this election are so cringe
"can we agree 'defund the police' was a bad idea now?"
"can we agree running another centrist dem was a bad idea now?"
"can we agree bernie ruined the party now?"
SHUT THE HELL UP
i get that everyone is frustrated and folks, i am here for it, but the usual suspects tweeting epic owns targeted at people two steps to the right/left of them for low hanging clout are obnoxiously self-serving and just create division within the left IN THE MIDDLE OF AN ELECTION
i swear politics is just aesthetics and sports to so many of the most popular political commentators on twitter. it's all about getting that sweet clout to help funnel people who love to see it into a monetized source each month so you can get paid to act self-righteous Online
