It’s July 1, which means a bunch of new state laws are going into effect across the country – the good, the bad, and the downright cruel.
Let’s take a look at what our Republican and Democratic-controlled state legislatures have been up to... 🧵

EFFECTIVE TODAY: In Maryland, adults 21 and over can now legally purchase cannabis from licensed dispensaries thanks to the work of Democratic state legislators. washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/…
BREAKING: SCOTUS just ruled against NC Republicans in Moore v. Harper, which centered around the fringe concept known as the Independent State Legislature Theory.
This win is a huge relief. But let’s be very clear about how the NC GOP just tried to bring down our democracy: 🧵
Moore v. Harper was filed by North Carolina Republicans after the state supreme court tossed out the GOP’s redistricting maps for being partisanly gerrymandered. Their entire objection rested on the fringe independent state legislature theory (ISL).
The ISL theory argues that state legislatures should have sole, unchecked authority to decide how our federal elections are run, with no say from the governor or the courts.
One year ago, 21 people – including 19 kids – were shot & killed in their school in Uvalde, Texas. Since then, the state’s GOP trifecta hasn't taken necessary action on gun safety reform, even though TX is one of the states most ravaged by gun violence. 🧵 politico.com/news/magazine/…
Texas has had more mass shooting deaths than any other state, yet GOP legislators continue to loosen gun laws.
Most recently, in 2021, Texas made it legal for any person to carry a gun in public, with no background check or training required. texastribune.org/2022/05/24/tex…
Even as parents plead for tougher gun laws following the Uvalde shooting, GOP leadership is refusing to take needed action on safety reforms, including a commonsense bill that would raise the minimum age to purchase assault rifles from 18 to 21. texastribune.org/2023/05/09/tex…
Yesterday, the Minnesota legislature wrapped up its first session with a Democratic trifecta in nearly a decade – and thanks to DFLers, it was one of their most productive EVER!
Let’s take a look at some of their biggest wins: 🧵
Less than a month into the session, they kept their promise to voters to defend reproductive rights, writing protections for abortion and contraception into state law. usatoday.com/story/news/nat…
Since then, they’ve also made MN a sanctuary state for abortion, protecting patients and providers from out-of-state bans.
That package of bills also protected access to gender-affirming care and banned conversion therapy for minors and vulnerable adults. thehill.com/homenews/state…
