1/ We are facing a second wave and the prospect of further restrictions and a national lockdown as a result of the government’s failure and incompetence.
2/ Infections are rising, the testing system is collapsing and the government has lost control of the virus because they have failed to deliver an effective test, track and trace system.
3/ We have been here before. This is the time for swift, decisive action, and that action must be clearly communicated to the British people. With lives and livelihoods on the line we cannot afford to be too slow again.
4/ That is why we are calling on the Prime Minister to convene a COBRA meeting and to update the country on the measures he is taking to keep the virus under control and fix the testing system.

I bought my council house back in 2007.

I owned my own home, lived there, paid the bills there and was registered to vote there, prior to selling the house in 2015.

All before I was an MP…
I've never been a ‘landlady’, owned a property portfolio or been a non-dom.

As with the majority of ordinary people who sell their own homes, I was not liable for capital gains tax because it was my home and the only one I owned.
My husband already owned his own home independently and I had an older child from a previous relationship.

Our son was born just 23 weeks into my pregnancy and spent eight months in intensive care. He is legally blind.

Being able to buy my council house back in 2007 was a proud moment for me. I worked hard, saved and bought it by the book.

I’m not ashamed - but I am angry that the Tories have since put the dream of a secure home out of reach for so many others. 🏡 🧵
Labour believes those who live in a council house should have the opportunity to own their own home.

Working people should be able to buy the social home they rented for a reasonable discount.
We’ve said we’ll review the unfair additional market discounts of up to 60% the Tories introduced in 2012, long after I was able to exercise the right to buy (25%) under the old system.

That’s not hypocrisy, it’s the right thing to do.

There are far better ways to build the new homes we desperately need than green lighting water pollution.

I’ve written with @SteveReedMP on why Labour will oppose these latest reckless plans from the Tory Party that brought you the sewage scandal.

The Tories (that’s you @michaelgove ) are being thoroughly disingenuous in suggesting that the only way we can build the homes we need in sensitive river catchment areas is by weakening environmental law. Don’t fall for it. 2/9
We have grave concerns about what this dangerous, blunt tool will mean for our precious waterways and fragile natural ecosystems.

It’s the latest in a long list of Tory failures on the environment. 3/9

Labour’s New Deal for Working People will be the biggest levelling-up of workers’ rights in decades - providing security, treating workers fairly, and paying a decent wage. 🧵1/8

We’ll tackle insecure work by banning zero-hours contracts, ending fire and rehire and ending qualifying periods for basic rights, which currently leave working people waiting up to two years for basic protections. 2/8
We’ll make work more family friendly by making flexible working a day one right except where it isn’t reasonably feasible, strengthening protections for pregnant women and by urgently reviewing parental leave. 3/8

Labour will empower trade unions to negotiate on behalf of their members, repealing vindictive anti-trade union legislation and strengthening union rights.

We will not only respect unions - but enhance their role. 🧵👇🏻
I was asked whether a Labour government would give a 10% pay rise across the board right now. I said the blunt answer is ‘no’ - that’s just not how the process works. (2/5)
It’s not for ministers to pluck numbers out of the air, overriding negotiations. That would just undermine industrial relations and the negotiating power of unions. (3/5)

Mark Fullbrook should never have been appointed Downing Street Chief of Staff - there’s certainly no place for him in No 10 now. His position is untenable. He must go.

The PM’s appalling judgement yet again exposed for all to see.

My letter with @DavidLammy to @liztruss👇🏻 1/4
His continued presence is not just a potential security risk but an ongoing threat to the credibility and prospects of UK diplomacy and ethical standards in government.

It rides roughshod over established protocols and leaves unacceptable conflict of interest in Downing St. 2/4
After just a month in office, this Prime Minister has refused to appoint an independent ethics adviser despite the sleaze and scandal flourishing on her watch.

This can’t go on any longer.
