NEW: Democratic Mississippi US Senate candidate Mike Espy raised more in one day than any candidate in state history after Justice Ginsburg's death.

His $500,000 weekend haul is more than triple what the GOP incumbent raised over a three month period.
mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
Along with a record-breaking surge in campaign donations, hundreds of new volunteers signed up this weekend to help the Espy campaign make calls and send text messages to potential voters.

Mike Espy: "“That’s Mississippi—the landmass that they overlooked. ... So I look at that and think about what’s been done to our campaign by the Democratic establishment in Washington. They’re overlooking this Mississippi possibility—they really are.” mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
Mike Espy's top issue is health care. He wants to build on the Affordable Care Act with lower prices and greater options for more people, he says.

But Justice Ginsburg's death means the ACA is now in peril with the court set to hear a case in November. mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
By July, Democrats had given more than $47 million to Amy McGrath in Kentucky.

Espy, who only had $1.35 million by the same point, was down just 5 points in the latest poll, after being down 8 in another.

He has laser focused his campaign on health care. mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith: “Justice Ginsburg devoted her life to the law, becoming one of the most respected & influential women in our time...President Trump & the Senate now have the solemn duty to fill that vacancy, a process that should not be delayed." mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
“Democratic party leaders have ignored our race for the U.S. Senate in Mississippi. They don’t think a Black man in Mississippi can win—and they continue to count out the South and Black voters." —Mike Espy
mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
Facts: @MikeEspyMS would be Mississippi's third Black US senator—but the first since 1881.

You read that right. 1881.

He'd be the first MS Dem to win a Senate seat since 1982.

MS's last Democratic senators spent most of their careers as segregationists.
mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
Latest polls of Mississippi Senate race, from newest to oldest:

Hyde-Smith +1
Hyde-Smith +5
Hyde-Smith +8

The most recent poll, from late August, is +1 HS with margin of error +/- 1.

You can see why Espy thinks national Dems should pay more attention.
mississippifreepress.org/5880/mike-espy…
The Supreme Court is (as always) on the ballot, but now more than ever before.

And so is health care for 100s of thousands of Mississippians.

NEW: After discovering that some officials in Mississippi and nationwide were keeping unidentified bodies for "personal collections" and refusing to return them, Pascagoula Lt. Darren Versiga began pushing for a law to regulate how remains are handled.
mississippifreepress.org/40991/cold-cas…
Lt. Versiga told @Shaunicy_ that he uncovered the problems when he began looking into decades worth of unsolved cold cases in Pascagoula.

He said a new bill in the Mississippi Senate could prevent the mishandling of bodies in the future.
mississippifreepress.org/40991/cold-cas…
@Shaunicy_ Lt. Versiga also said the bill, introduced by Sen. Brice Wiggins, could also help prevent cases where counties bury bodies without ever informing families of a loved ones' death—as happened to at least seven families in Hinds County.

NEW: The Mississippi Senate stripped out the House Medicaid expansion bill and replaced it with one that could cost the State millions more while covering less people.

"This is not Obamacare" but "a very responsible and conservative bill," a senator said.
mississippifreepress.org/40893/senate-m…
Sen. Kevin Blackwell estimates that 80,000 Mississippians would qualify for Medicaid coverage under the Senate plan, but said he expects as few as 40,000 may actually enroll—significantly lower than the House’s estimation of up to 200,000 for its version.
mississippifreepress.org/40893/senate-m…
The House plan includes full Medicaid expansion under the ACA, allowing residents who make up to 138% of the federal poverty level ($20,120 for an individual) to qualify. The Senate plan only allows people making up to 100% (~$15k) to qualify.

You deplorable misogynist.

You're using photos of her from 10 years ago—when she had an eating disorder.

She was this thin because of hateful assholes like you making her feel bad about her body. Like she could never be thin enough.

You are NOT entitled to women's bodies.
To quote Taylor herself reflecting on her eating disorder:

“If you’re thin enough, then you don’t have that ass that everybody wants. But if you have enough weight on you to have an ass, your stomach isn’t flat enough. It’s all just f—ing impossible.”

Here's how people reacted after she stopped starving herself (yes, she really did that).

People suck.

We may be a local Mississippi outlet, but this is important. It should be leading every newspaper in the country.

NEW: Brett Favre was interrogated by state attorneys for nine hours Monday during a secret deposition about the Mississippi welfare scandal and the millions in TANF funds that went to him, a volleyball stadium and a drug company he was heavily invested in.

Favre's deposition was originally scheduled for October, but the State rescheduled it for after the statewide elections.

It is unlikely that the transcript will become public anytime soon. In October, a judge agreed to a request from the State, Favre and other defendants to issue a protective order sealing certain discovery documents—like deposition transcript.

NEW: Some Mississippi voters were left in line for hours as election officials printed new ballots after at least 9 Hinds County polling places ran out.

Local officials attribute the shortages in Mississippi's largest county to unexpectedly high turnout.
mississippifreepress.org/37392/nine-hin…
Voters told the Mississippi Free Press earlier today that the McLeod Elementary polling place ran out of ballots as early as 8:30 a.m.; voting began at 7 a.m. and lasts until 7 p.m.

Hinds County is the home of Jackson, Mississippi's 83%-Black capital.

“We were not prepared for this amazing turnout,” Hinds County Democratic Executive Committee member Jason McCarty said today, calling the ballot shortages "unacceptable."
