Bird sellers, independent journalists, and the state:

How the FIA/NCCIA is freezing the bank accounts of independent journalists, their family members, and anyone linked to them over “anti-state” posts.

🧵
On April 10, Nadeem Nasir, a 60-year-old bird seller in Lahore, tried to make a routine payment using his bank account's mobile app.

Each transaction failed.

His bank app said his account was “Invalid.”
Puzzled, Nasir went to the bank.

A clerk told him the FIA Cyber Crime Wing had frozen his funds. No letter. No official notice. Just an email the bank refused to share.

“I was shocked,” Nasir told me over the phone. “What crime had I committed?”

The Punjab government is set to table and pass today the Punjab Public Awareness and Dissemination of Information Act, 2025.

The aim is to stop journalists and citizens from questioning how much public money the Punjab govt has spent on ads and promoting itself.

🧵
The bill, once passed, will apply retroactively. Thus, from Jan 1, 2024, before the election.

It allows the Punjab govt to run “public awareness campaigns” through any ad agency, on any platform - billboards, TV, print, radio, cinema, digital.
Now for the troubling part.

Any complaints against these campaigns can only be filed with the Director General of Public Relations (DGPR).

A short thread on the recent developments regarding the military-run corporate agricultural farming project: 🧵
Over the past few months, government ministers have repeatedly claimed that the state land being leased to a military-run private company for corporate agricultural farming is barren and will be developed to address Pakistan’s food security challenges.
However, as shown in this fact check, the land being allocated by the Punjab government for corporate farming in Arifwala is fertile, not barren.

A recent tussle in Pakpattan between Punjab govt and farmers over state land being handed over for the army’s corporate farming raises a key question:

How much of the 4.8 million acres earmarked for corporate farming by SIFC is actually “barren”?

🧵
Farmers in Pakpattan are challenging the Punjab govt's transfer of state land to an army-led corporate farming initiative, according to Lahore High Court documents.

Petitioners argue that they and their families have been cultivating the land for the state since 1928.
Yet, in Dec 2023, the caretaker Punjab govt allocated this land to a military-run private company for corporate farming.
