Re: People of Praise Charismatic Covenant Community (CCC)

I grew up in the most radical and truly cult-like CCC, Bread of Life, founded by Richard Herman in Akron, OH. We were associate members in OH and then moved with the founders to found their mission in Reynosa, Mexico.
We considered The Sword of the Spirit ecumenical communities like People of Praise or Alleluia to be too secular and worldly. We saw Word of God community founded by Ralph Martin in Michigan to have lacked resolve when he ended it and apologized. We were lunatics but influential.
Based on this experience, I do not think the People of Praise community is quite as wild and niche and over the top as most people think. It was a Pentecostal and Charismatic, which scares many Catholics and seculars alike, but not cult-like.
This doesn’t make me happy about the potential nomination or register much on the optics in general, but I know what a cult is like from experience and I do not like seeing it get watered down into hyperbolic rhetoric.
There were and are real cults and abuse in the Catholic Church and it does no favours to those of us who survived them to see un or underinformed hot takes casually making these serious determinations Willy nilly.
I don’t often talk about this cult experience because it is painful and also because I am just not ready yet. But it is hard to see so much of this flying around without making this one note.
By the way, I would love to say I WAS IN A CCC, THEY ARE CULTS, THIS IS A CULT, IT IS EVIL! But precisely because I was in one, I know that not all CCCs were the same and cannot in good faith lump my horrible experience with this one.

The backlash to this statement of solidarity for Pride Month has been very clarifying and revealing. Sadly, it has also been quite predictable. But there have also been a lot of positive responses in replies and private messages.
One regret is that it came as a surprise to some. This shows me that it came far too late. But I also know it is the fruit of conversion in my own spiritual life. I am blessed to stand with the LGBTQ+ community, a place I have not always stood before. I still have much to learn.
There seem to be two false assumptions, along with garden-variety homophobia, guiding most Catholic opposition to Pride Month. The first is assuming that "pride" refers to the sin of pride. The second is to sexualize the month and, in turn, the identities of the LGBTQ+ community.

Look, it is transparently obvious that trying to run a "fidelity" month as a counter to Pride Month implies that the relationships Pride Month celebrates lack fidelity of a particular kind. It is just a more passive aggressive rebranding of the "traditional family" rhetoric.
Those who want to try to pull this one off will need to, at minimum, have everything in order where they are trying, without evidence or argument, to imply disorder. And many of them don't, well beyond Mr. Russell (e.g., Dreher and Trump). It is easy to see this double-standard.
Me pointing it in first-person and publicly disclosed cases does not require me to know what sort of "fidelity" is off in their case; it only means to show the lack of basic credibility in the reversal their rhetorical campaign seeks to imply.

The criterion for my account of whiteness as placeless is *nostalgia,* longing for home. There are diasporic peoples who have been or are displaced, but, unlike whiteness, their nostalgia, their longing has a proper object. Whiteness has no place or location nor is it a diaspora.
I am grateful to the critics of an earlier tweet on this subject for enabling me to refine this idea against their criticism.
I would especially note those who detected a well-known and perverse antisemitic trope lurking in the critique of placelessness. That, most of all, merited a more careful refinement, explicitly accounting for the diasporic experience.

After the 2020 election, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops chose to not draft an instruction that would potentially restrict reception of the Eucharist, despite a strong desire to "instruct" Catholic Democrat politicians like Biden and Pelosi by some bishops, this past fall.
After this effort failed, one of the bishops who supported the general instruction has now directed it specifically at Pelosi within the jurisdiction of his archdiocese, with the support of bishops who also supported it.
There no meaningful way to interpret this as being apolitical given the prior failure of the Conference to make the equivalent ecclesiastical instruction that this bishop is publicly making now, alone, with the support of his conservative wing of episcopal colleagues.

I was born and raised in full time Catholic ministry in parishes and apostolates. I attended Franciscan University of Steubenville. It took over 30 years to find a voice to speak out against the injustices and evils I had seen and felt countless times for, and within, myself.
I have felt the injustice of another person spanking you or ordering your parent to spank your 2 year old brother; forcing dress and food codes and even telling you that a bed mattress is corrupting.
I have seen the deep hatred instilled in myself for myself, and for everyone else who did not fit their religio-cultural ideal to the exact specifications they prescribed. I know the sense that the entire world, even within my family and religion, is totally perverse and debased.

When Peterson talk about the Bible as "meta-truth" (which would mean the condition for the possibility of there being truth), he is actually cashing out his 1999 claim in *Maps of Meaning* that the order of Meaning (capital M) must tame the chaos of Being (capital B).
This claim rest upon an ontological inversion, a retreat from and rebellion against metaphysics, and the resultant idea of meta-truth is simply a codification of myth as a the POSTMODERN substitute for classical Truth (capital T).
Friends, this is a claim one can make as a postmodernist as a Jungian or something related to those things, but it simply does not function as anything that takes classical metaphysics or ontology seriously. It destroys and dismantles the Truth of scripture.
