I have an incredibly important story tonight at 6. If you’re voting by mail, there’s a chance your vote won’t be counted if you don’t put it inside of the secrecy envelope that’s provided as part of your ballot. wtae.com/article/secrec…
Some back of the envelope math from the primaries suggests that the rejection rate for ballots not inside the secrecy sleeve is about 5%. Right now, 2 million Pennsylvanians and rising have requested mail in ballots. 5% of that is 100,000. Pennsylvania’s margin in 2016: 44,000.
Profiling Washington County tonight. They had 22,000 people vote by mail in the primary. Around 1,000 ballots were ‘naked’. In June primary, counties were allowed to count these ballots after careful review. Last week, state Supreme Court said these ballots must be tossed in Nov.
Ballot goes into Secrecy Envelope which goes into Return envelope that you will have to sign and date on the back.
There will be instructions in your ballot.
We laid out all of this in a story last Friday, check it out below.
Tonight at six, we'll talk to an elections administrator and a non-partisan voting rights group.
They're both happy this conversation is being had now before most Pennsylvania voters get their ballots.
Another thing to note: And I've tried to include this in every voting-related story-- As of right now, all in-person precincts are open in Pennsylvania on Election Day.

HAPPENING NOW: @DCPoliceDept has confirmed officer involved shooting in NW. Unclear what happened here. Working to gather details. Investigation looks to be centered on Madison St.. Can see chopper flying overhead. Saw an ambulance leave the scene.Park police cruiser here as well
Here’s a video and chopper flying over the scene. A handful of unmarked officers here as well. #Fox5DC
#Fox5DC has learned of another shooting scene nearby that may be connected to this one. That scene is less than a mile away.
A 26 year old was the last surviving member of his family. He was found shot to death in his apt last fall. 9 months later, the DC Medical Examiner still lists manner of death ‘undetermined’. His family believes Zack Freeling was murdered. Story here: fox5dc.com/news/nobody-be…
Medical Examimer’s office declined to elaborate on why Freeling’s death was still deemed ‘undetermined’ suggesting I reach out to MPD, who told me they’re still investigating and urged me to reach out to ME. It’s a back and forth Freeling’s family has been stuck in. #Fox5DC
Freeling’s family has been happy with MPDs handling of this investigation but is frustrated that it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. They’ve started a GoFundMe, Justice for Zack Freeling, to pay for private investigators & a reward, hoping someone with more info comes forward.
HAPPENING NOW: @FBI confirms they’re “conducting court authorized law enforcement activity” on the 900 block of I street SE. This is at Crossing Apartments. Resident tells Me he saw multiple officers in military-style uniforms w/ rifles walking thru building.Waiting to learn more
FBI agents continue walking in and out of the building. Multiple people who live inside have told me they’ve seen NCIS, too. One woman told me she saw postal police.
FBI agents walking in with what appear to be cardboard boxes. #Fox5DC
Imagine having a bar across the street from Nats Park, gearing up for Opening Day, then being told you have to shut down 20% of your business with 24 hours notice. A reality for @waltersbardc when @DDOTDC told him to take this down during games. We’re live at 10+11 on #Fox5DC
*48 hours notice!! Sorry!!
Walter's owner, Jeremy Gifford says DDOT told him it was a safety issue. And the stop order specifically references taking the structure down for the 3 hours before the game and 2 hours after. Something that's impossible to do with the structure he's built.
