The Alvie branch left the Port Fairy railway just west of Colac and headed north to Alvie. The line was around 10 miles long, opened 1923 closed 1954. Alvie was suited to grazing, dairying and vegetable-growing, particularly potatoes and onions. victorianrailways.net/grades/alviema…

A passenger carriage was attached to the three weekly goods trains. After 1930 due to low number of passengers, they travelled in the guards van.

RY 471 0-6-0 was built c. 1890 by Robinson, Campbell & Sloss South Melbourne, new R class 471. Rebuilt c. 1905 with larger cylinders and boiler and reclassed as RY. Subsequently classed as Y.

The Royal train for the Duke of Gloucester visited Alvie in 1934. Prince was ill and planned activities were cancelled. If nothing else, Alvie could claim a visit by the Duke and the Royal Train!
