First and foremost, people wanted to know that my patient was okay. He is. We were able to find a good path forward. My office staff and I have learned to navigate these issues. 1/
Many people offered money, from here in the USA, to Canada, Australia, Peru. There were many requests for me to set up a GoFundMe.
If we were to set up GoFundMes for every patient we saw who was dealing with similar issues, it’d be our full-time jobs, and not a solution. 2/
Many people shared heartbreaking stories of their own, that were moving, infuriating, powerful.
One of the reasons the thread resonated is because of how universal the experience is.
It told us truths we already knew. 3/
As always, on Twitter, some people chose to attack each other, or me. One person said I should be “taken out.” Others called me a pill pusher.
Others had their own theories about the proper treatments.
But mostly, people came together and agreed on the need for change. 4/
I shared the overwhelming response with my patient, including the many offers of help.
I told him he was right, that people already knew.
But he was wrong, that people wouldn’t care.
And that gives me hope. 5/
Some last thoughts:
“Broken” implies that something worked, and then it broke, and if you fix the broken part it’ll work again.
Is our healthcare system “broken” or working exactly as certain interests intended (with a massive amount of lobbying to keep it that way)? 6/
Healthcare is a major cause of bankruptcy in America.
Healthcare lobbies spend more than double the gun and oil+gas lobbies combined.
These two facts tell a story.
If you understand that story, you understand why nothing is broken here.
And EVERYTHING is. 7/
Normally I pride myself on responding to everyone, but I know I have many comments and DMs I haven’t gotten to yet.
My apologies. I’ve been super busy, and honestly pretty burnt out.
It was good to unplug for a bit.
I know I missed a “Sherlock Saturday.” He’ll be back. 8/
One last thought.
By far the majority of GoFundMe fundraisers are to cover medical expenses.
Strangers helping the sick among us pay their medical bills.
People paying for each other to get the treatment they need.
We know what’s right.
We know the system we want.
