🔥BREAKING: Tory MP @CrispinBlunt has called for Equalities Minister @trussliz to be sacked.

"It is clear that the Equalities Minister does not have the time or necessary empathy to continue in this role".

Extraordinary for a Tory MP to call for the sacking of a Tory minister.
It all follows a bitter exchange in the Commons earlier, following the government's response to the consultation on the Gender Recognition Act. This week the govt decided not to make it easier for someone to legally change their gender, much to the anger of some liberal Tory MPs.
🔥Crispin Blunt continues blisteringly, "Her characterisation of this as a clash of competing rights betrays a fatal misunderstanding... On equalities, her approach has been didactic and suggestive of someone who has a set view."
Even if you haven't followed what's happening with the Gender Recognition Act, it is v explosive for an MP to call for one of their own govt ministers to be sacked.

As I reported this week, there is huge disappointment among some in Tory party at govt's approach to LGBT rights.
The govt argues that it has made some things easier this week, e.g. reducing the administrative cost to legally change your gender and moving the process online.

But govt decided against demedicalising the process, i.e. you still need the sign-off of two doctors.
Goes without saying that this is an issue which has elicited very strong views on both sides - others have welcomed Liz Truss's response to the GRA consultation. But the political fallout is important - it speaks to a divide within the Conservative party on this matter.
Also note that Liz Truss holds two posts. Crispin Blunt is calling for her to lose the Equalities brief, but he's not calling for her to be sacked as International Trade Secretary.

BREAKING: @kimleadbeater is bringing forward a bill to legalise assisted dying.

She recently topped the ballot for private members bills. A vote is likely before Xmas.

Parliament has debated this before, but it looks more likely to pass than ever.

Kim Leadbeater's bill will be fleshed out in the coming weeks, but it would only apply to people with a terminal diagnosis who are mentally competent.

What's significant is Keir Starmer is in favour, as he told me in March when he promised a vote.

With so many new MPs, it's hard to say at this point exactly how the numbers look.

It'd be a free vote - with many Lab, Libs, Greens in support.

In 2015, assisted dying was defeated by 330-118 under David Cameron. But we now have a radically different parliament.

The Business Committee is hearing this morning from subpostmasters, their solicitors and key figures from govt/Post Office Limited and Fujitsu which designed Horizon.

The Post Office Minister Kevin Hollinrake is sitting listening to all of the evidence - he's up at 12.
Solicitor for many of the affected subpostmasters Neil Hudgell says just three people have so far been fully compensated for the scandal.
The committee are now hearing from former sub-postmasters Alan Bates and Jo Hamilton.

Bates says people are dying waiting for compensation. Hamilton says "a factory of bureaucracy" around applying for the money "makes you feel like a criminal all over again".

Boris Johnson resists temptation to criticise Rishi Sunak, who designed it.

"It was not presented to me at the time as something that would add to the budget of risk", it wasn't a "gamble" he says.
Boris Johnson says in a meeting in September Chris Whitty looked and him and said "It's Eat Out to Help the Virus".

But Johnson says that struck him as odd because until then nobody had suggested to him it had accelerated the spread.

BREAKING: Rwanda government threatens to pull out of the deal if it does not adhere to international law.

Hugely problematic - and potentially humiliating - for govt if its partner country decides the deal is too toxic.

Part of the issue with the deal for judges in the Supreme Court is that Rwanda has been accused of breaking international agreements in the way it treats asylum seekers. Now Rwanda says the UK government's potential attitude to international law is a step too far.

BREAKING: The Supreme Court rules that the government’s policy to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda is UNLAWFUL.
Supreme Court unanimously decides that Rwanda might return asylum seekers to their country of origin before having their cases properly considered (breaking the principle of non-refoulement).
The Supreme Court was convinced by evidence from UNHCR that Rwanda had ‘refouled’ asylum seekers in the past.

For example, a similar agreement with Israel saw Rwanda secretly move asylum seekers to a neighbouring country where they could be sent back to their country of origin.
