2020 or 1968? “It seems a little unusual that some of those who are usually so interested in the preservation of states’ rights, and in so many instances, rightfully so, are so quick to abdicate the police power of the states in this particular situation.” huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio…
The Kerner Commission was right — as they were about pretty much everything — about constitutional issues with rioting statutes.
They said a carefully considered, “tightly-drawn” federal rioting law might play a “limited” role.
2020 or 1968? “We are in an era of lawlessness. If we are to maintain freedom by maintaining law and order, it is essential that we not put stumbling blocks before our police officers.” huffpost.com/entry/anti-rio…
As you may have inferred from this thread, I finally got around to cracking that @rickperlstein book open.

Judge Lamberth noted that most Jan. 6 rioters “wrongly but sincerely believed the election was stolen” and said Sullivan was the only Jan. 6 defendant he knew of who “showed up to the Capitol despite not subscribing to the goals of the protest.”
NEW: Feds seeking 7+ years in federal prison for John Sullivan, which would put him pretty high up on the list of Jan. 6 sentences.
At trial, prosectors told jurors that he came to the Capitol with the "goal of inciting the crowd," and showed evidence he bragged he wanted to "make those Trump supporters f--- s--- up."
"Sullivan also told Sacker that his motivations were 'siding with anyone willing to rip this down and put something new in place, put something better in place. Pretty simple.'" storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…
DOJ: "As his campaign to sell footage to news outlets evolved, Sullivan suddenly began relabeling himself as a journalist—even changing the caption of his website from 'activist' to 'journalist.'"
Jan. 6 rioter Zachary Alam, the subject of an absurd @SharylAttkisson segment in October, is set to be sentenced tomorrow.
Sharyl didn’t actually cover Alam’s trial, but told her viewers that his indictment doesn’t “mention any evidence he’s a Trump supporter.”
In fact and reality, the press release she cited seconds later in the segment noted that he has a MAGA hat on under his fur hat, and there’s this from his mom:
There's just so much deception happening in @SharylAttkisson October 2023 segment that it makes you feel like banging your head against he wall.
Take that line about the how Alam's indictment doesn't mention "any evidence he's a Trump supporter."
Well, key basic question there, is it a speaking indictment?
A former Marine “who firebombed a Planned Parenthood clinic in Costa Mesa, California, and plotted other attacks, including an attack on the Orange County, California, power grid in furtherance of a race war, an attack at Dodger Stadium during an LGBTQI+ pride night celebration, and the home invasions of Jewish homes in Los Angeles was sentenced today to nine years in prison…”
DOJ: "Defendant’s fellow Marines noted that he made hateful comments towards all non-white individuals, including Jewish, Hispanic, African American, and Muslim acquaintances, including, for example, openly using a racial slur to refer to one fellow Marine’s spouse."
As former President Donald Trump continues to spew lies about election fraud, one of his supporters who broke police lines on Jan. 6 is blaming Trump's previous lie spewing for his conduct:
Joshua John Portlock's team writes that the Jan. 6 defendant would still have a "lucrative career at Mitsubishi Motors" had he not fallen for Donald Trump's absurd claims about the 2020 election. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…
Feds are seeking 27 months for Portlock, who was wearing a "white cowboy hat with the words 'Trump 2020' on the front and 'Stop the Steal' in red letters on the back." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…
