I am daily posting "Aaj ka Panchang"

But have anyone noticed that name of this month is "Adhika Ashwin" usually it should be "Ashwin" only?

Why it's named so?

There are two types of months naming system

🔹Saura Mana

🔹Chandra Mana

Solar months are named on Rashis in which Sun is currently present with respect to earth

Lunar months are named on Nakshatra in which Purnmashi occurs

2/n

According to Hindu calendar

Solar year is the time of one revolution of Earth around Sun
&
Lunar month is time of revolution of Moon around Earth
and
one day is time of Earth's rotation around its own axis

These time periods are not fixed arbitrarily 28 days or 30 days

Hindu calendar is Luni-Solar in nature

It is based on both phase of Moon and Location of Sun in ecliptic

But duration of Solar month is more than Lunar month

Because average time for Lunar cycle is 29.5 days and one Solar shift(from one Rashi to another) is 30.4 days

Solar shift takes on average 0.9 days more than a cycle of Moon

Due to this delay in Solar shift

After every 30 months before the Sun can shift into another Rashi a new Lunar cycle begins

Now this complete Lunar cycle will be called as Adhika (13th Month) in that year

That's why it is called as "Adhika" extra

And this can be any month after every 30 months that will be called "Adhika"

I hope now you know the concept of "Adhika Masa"

All is based on movements and positions of Moon and Sun with respect to Earth and each other

It's significance

Every month has its own Name for Sun but not for this Adhika month

Sun is representative of Bhagwan Vishnu , So in this Adhika month Sun is worshipped as Bhagvan Vishnu

It is considered that Bhagwan Vishnu listen to every one more in this month himself

So it's recommended to Recite Mantras related to Bhagvan Vishnu

Or

Do more devotional activities for self

It's corresponding Lunar month is just opposite Nakshatra of that Rashi

This is how names of both systems are related to each other

And it's not fixed as there are 27 Nakshatra and 12 Rashis.
