Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Trump's Supreme Court nominee, has only been a judge for three years.
But combing through her cases, she's developed a robust record on abortion, immigration, and gun rights 🧵 buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…
Barrett's views on abortion will be at the center of her confirmation. At Notre Dame, where she was a law professor, she spoke about her opposition to abortion and was a member of University Faculty for Life.
She hasn’t written opinions or dissents about abortion since becoming a judge but participated in two cases that offer insight. In both instances, while on the 7th Circuit, she sided with Indiana in legal fights over the state’s unsuccessful push to restrict abortion practices.
Barrett's record on police power is less clear cut. In 2019, she wrote opinions both upholding and denying qualified immunity to law enforcement officers accused of misconduct.
But also that year, Barrett sided with law enforcement in a lawsuit challenging prison discipline tactics. In a dissenting opinion, she disagreed with reviving a lawsuit filed by inmates who were hit by buckshot fired by guards.
On immigration, Barrett sided with the Trump administration’s decision to expand a rule that would deny permanent residency to immigrants deemed likely to use public benefits.
In June 2020 though, she did side with liberal-leaning colleagues in writing an opinion not only reviving a deportation challenge, but also disagreeing with a legal opinion issued in 2018 by then-attorney general Jeff Sessions.
On gun rights, in 2019 she wrote critically about federal and state laws that ban people convicted of most felony crimes from owning a firearm.
In her dissent, Barrett worried the Second Amendment was being treated as a “second-class” right.

Cruises are often marketed as a fun way to travel, but some passengers on major cruise lines such as Carnival and Disney have said in civil lawsuits that they were raped and assaulted while onboard, often times by crew members.
Documents reviewed by BuzzFeed News show that parents and guardians have also alleged their children were molested by crew members or other passengers.
According to FBI data, there have been 454 reported allegations of sex crimes on cruise ships since 2015. Experts believe the actual numbers are far higher, as many sexual assaults go unreported.
Trump has been explicitly teasing his campaign for months, but after declaring his candidacy and filing his paperwork, he is an official candidate. That lets him raise money for activities like rallies, which grow his political brand and ego.
Trump’s latest bid comes as Republicans largely underperformed in the midterms. Many in the GOP blamed Trump after many of his endorsed candidates, especially those in critical races in Pennsylvania and Arizona, lost.
In 2010, Princeton researchers said the optimal household income for happiness was $75,000 (before taxes). Adjusted for inflation, $75,000 in 2010 is about $100,000 today. buzzfeednews.com/article/veness…
A household earning $100,000 “is middle class, but where in the middle class they fall can vary drastically” depending on where they live and how many people they’re supporting, said Catie Hogan, a financial educator at Parthean. buzzfeednews.com/article/veness…
We spoke with people around the country whose households earn roughly $100,000 about what “six-figure living” looks like today. Here’s what they had to say: buzzfeednews.com/article/veness…
Audio from more than 80 meetings contains 14 statements from nine different TikTok employees indicating that engineers in China had access to US data between September 2021 and January 2022, at the very least.
“Everything is seen in China,” said a member of TikTok’s Trust and Safety department in a September 2021 meeting. In another September meeting, a director referred to one Beijing-based engineer as a “Master Admin” who “has access to everything.”
Cambodians fled genocide, bringing their trauma with them. Their children felt its rippled effects.
Now the newer generation is working to end a destructive cycle that began before they were born. ⬇️ buzzfeednews.com/article/vivian…
Take Cambodian American Ny Nourn, who came to the US with her mother when she was a child in the 1980s. Her only memories of the collective trauma were wisps of the hunger and cold in a Thailand refugee camp. buzzfeednews.com/article/vivian…
Only when Nourn was imprisoned after her abusive then-boyfriend killed a man did her mother open up about the traumas she endured keeping their family safe: land mines, trudging for days on foot past dead bodies, gang rape. buzzfeednews.com/article/vivian…
