The Proud Boys chose Delta Park because they are racist and chose a park that is central to Black Portland history. They chose it to insult and flaunt the impunity of whiteness where the racist scars of history remain.
To understand Portland and Oregon, you must always remember that it although it was a free state, it was not abolitionist. It was intended to be Black-free. The Oregon Consitution prohibited Black people from living in and owning property or a business in the state.
Obviously, the 14th Amendment overruled the state constitution, but redlining, racism, and the Klan managed to keep Black people out pretty effectively. The only real influx of Black people were railroad employees and they were allowed to live in nearby Albina neighborhood
Oregon STILL had the racist 10-2 verdict system than even Louisiana recently rid itself of until the US Supreme Court struck it down in April this year. Yes, we had Klan juries until April 2020.
During WW2, Kaiser had a shipyard in Portland and many Black people moved here to work there, but there was nowhere for them to live. The city's Housing Authority was too racist to move to open areas for housing Black people. They dithered, so on its own, Kaiser built Vanport
It was ramshackle, but it was housing for the ship workers and about a third of the residents of Vanport were Black. It was in low land along the Columbia River and protected by dikes.
In 1948, the dikes were breached and Vanport was utterly destroyed. What was so horrible is that the people were told there was nothing to worry about. It was untrue. The dikes failed and the city was flooded in minutes.
And let's just say that Portland did not welcome the displaced Black people of Vanport - and they were shunted into Albina and North Portland, creating a very segregated city. oregonencyclopedia.org/articles/vanpo…
To pour salt on the wounds, Portland used eminent domain to demolish the vibrant Black commercial district and residential neighborhood that stood where Legacy Emmanuel hospital was built. Of course, being Black, white Portland called it blight
So Black Portland was forced out once again with a host of empty promises. Legacy just started talking about keeping promises made in the 60s a year ago, now the Black people have been displaced by gentrification.
So, fifty years after promising a pittance - a community center - to Black Portland, they start talking about delivering on that promise now that most Black people in the Albina neighborhood have been gentrified out to Gresham - straight out of the city . oregonlive.com/portland/2012/…
So, in addition to being white nationalists coming to a "progressive" city, the Proud Boys are picking a scab, flaunting the impunity with which the police treat them, and doing it at the site of a historical wound.
And by the way, here are the results from a referendum to remove the ban on Black people from the Oregon Constitution. It is galling and shameful that so many voted to retain the language. They claimed it was respect for history. Just like the traitor statues and flag defenders.

Susan Lorincz has been charged with murdering Ajike Owens; her arrest was delayed thanks, in part, to the Stand Your Ground law that she believes gave her the right to murder Owens. So, Owens was not just murdered by Lorincz, but also by the white nationalist @ALEC_states
ALEC - the American Legislative Exchange Council is a bill mill, writing model legislation that legislators can grab off their site and introduce. Some do it without even reading the bill, which is why we see videos of state GOP reps befuddled about their own bills.
ALEC has a directory of model policies for all sorts of issues. They call themselves "nonpartisan" which is a lie. Some of the hateful, racist, laws they promoted include the Arizona, show me your papers bill that encouraged harassment of Latinos and people of color.
I am old enough to remember the Grand Jury investigation of Bill Clinton by Kenneth Starr. He and the media had this fiction that they just happened to catch him as he was taking out the garbage.
Contrast that with Jack Smith from whom we heard nothing until sharing the indictment. Also notable that Smith reminded the media about the presumption of innocence while Starr presumed guilt - even on things he ended up finding no evidence and had to drop.
The Starr investigation leaked constantly. Several people in the media have stated that Kavanaugh leaked with official approval from Ken Starr. Contrast that with reporters getting information from Smith investigation by watching who goes in and out. People didn't even know there
The death of Ashli Babbitt is a case of monumental hypocrisy and dishonesty on the part of Republicans. These are people who justified the murder of Breonna Taylor who was sleeping in her own bed by saying she deserved it because she dated a suspected drug dealer.
Meanwhile Ashli Babbitt was climbing through a broken window into the Capitol, ignoring police orders to stop. She was attempting to overthrow democracy. She was warned but ignored the warning and was shot. Not one Republican said she should have complied.
The same people who wrapped themselves in shameful blue line flags and screeched "Blue Lives Matter" as though there were a national policy of impunity for shooting police are now calling a cop a thug (he's Black) and attacking the police
Republicans have long sought to make economic boycotts illegal. Here is the Republican organization Heritage Foundation urging states to ban ethical investments. heritage.org/article/elimin…
Here's the white nationalist filth ALEC proposing a model law to ban Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance investing. alec.org/article/alec-i…
Here they are proposing banning secondary boycotts. The legendary lettuce boycott that helped win bargaining rights for United Farmworkers. was a secondary boycott. alec.org/model-policy/r…
My nephew has two children. When the youngest was three, despite being born female, they were obviously pretty butch, refusing to wear dresses, preferring black, brown, and navy blue, hating pastels, loving NASCAR and football, a physical daredevil. What many would call a tomboy
When they came out at 20 as lesbian, I was not surprised. They called me for advice on coming out to my sister and I said, "Sweetie, she already knows." But I expected they had more to come out with. I asked them what pronoun they prefer and they cried because they want to
transition but would be disowned, they are certain, by my nephew. I think they are right, my nephew is pretty rigid. He delighted in their interest in his interests when they were a child, but as an adult...not so much.
