ATLAS; THE TITAN GOD OF ENDURANCE, STRENGTH AND ASTRONOMY
Greek Mythology Image
After the Titans lost in the Titanomarchy, Atlas was condemned to hold up the celestial heavens for eternity. Atlas was considered to be the strongest of the Titans as he is able to hold up the pillar of the Earth on his shoulders. Image
Atlas was the commander of the Titan army and he led them in the Titanomachy. When they lost the battle, as punishment for Atlas, Zeus gave him the task of holding up the heavens. Later, he was appointed guardian of the pillars which held the earth and sky asunder. Image
Atlas was also said to be the god who instructed mankind in the art of astronomy. Astronomy was a tool which was used by sailors in navigation and farmers in measuring the seasons
Hercules was said to have encountered Atlas during his quest for the Golden Apples of the Hesperides Image
Hercules agreed to take the heavens upon his shoulders while Atlas fetched the apples. The hero also killed the Hesperian Dragon which was said to be the tormentor of Atlas, and Hercules built two great pillars at the ends of the earth. The pillars were meant to relieve the Titan Image
of his labour.
Some versions say after Hercules took the heavens from Atlas, Atlas refused to give Hercules the apples and collect the heavens back. Hercules had to then trick Atlas into taking his position. Hercules still built those pillars to relive the titan of his labour
In another myth, Atlas was transformed into the story Atlas mountain by Perseus when he shown the head of Medusa. That is what is sometimes known as the Atlas mountains in Northwest Africa. Image
The parents were Lapetus and Clymene and his siblings were Epimetheus, Menoetius, Prometheus. His children where the nymph Calypso(1st image), Maia who was the mother of Hermes ImageImage
Atlas and Menoetius sided with the Titans while Epimetheus and Prometheus sided with Zeus. The Titans lost and were confined to Tartarus.
