Next up, "Establishing Meaningful Mentoring Relationships to Promote Diversity in the Wildlife Profession" by @FelegeLab and Kaylan Kemink.
As faculty, one of our most important jobs is helping others find their paths in this profession. #TWS2020
Mentoring is a series of MEANINGFUL interactions, with a CONSISTENT interest in the success and progress of the mentee. #TWS2020
Two forms: Career and Interpersonal Support. Both are important. #TWS2020
What are the goals? Deliverables? Expectations? Is this just a one-way transmission of knowledge? Mentees often see it this way. #TWS2020
Mentors envision a more interdependent framework. Working together and learning from each other. Like canoeing with a partner where one steers and one provides the power. But you need to be on the same page. #TWS2020
How do we help women in this male dominated field? Women need support so they feel like the genuinely belong and are welcomed. Need to find areas of identity overlap, which can be difficult with cross-gender mentoring. #TWS2020
Cross-gendering mentoring can be complicated, but hugely beneficial for women to have male mentors. We can use our male privilege to advocate for our mentees. Check out the book Athena Rising. #TWS2020
Women don't need to be rescued. This is disempowering. #TWS2020
Long term relationships are key for successful mentorship. Reflect and adjust as goals change over time. #TWS2020
Women want a mentor who "gets it" and "truly honors it". #TWS2020
Mentees have responsibilities too. Communication is the key, especially when it comes to expectations. #TWS2020
Lot's of great information in this one. Thanks @FelegeLab
