Ideology Series: Democratic Socialism (definitions, voter groups, lead figures) Image
Democratic Socialism is an ideology that is very left wing on economic issues and social issues. On economics, DS voters are in favor of many policies commonly attributed to socialism, such as tuition-free college, medicare for all, and strictly progressive tax rates.
On social issues, they are also very left wing and progressive. Aside from gay rights, abortion rights, strict gun laws, and legalized marijuana, many of these voters support de-funding inner city police departments and manually evening the economic playing field for minorities.
On foreign policy, these voters are very non-interventionist in general, opposing most war and intervention, though it can differ slightly between voters.
This ideology became mainstream recently, emerging in it's current form around 2015. These voters supported VT Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2016 and 2020 Democratic Presidential primaries, though some voters also supported MA Sen. Elizabeth Warren in 2020.
The prime DemSoc base is young people between 18 and 34, particularly those in urban areas. College students are a very large voter group for DemSocs. Recently, DemSocs have found increased support among Latinos.
Notable DemSoc politicians include:

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT)
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY)
Rep. Illhan Omar (D-MN)
Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA)
Rep. Radisha Tlaib (D-MI)
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA)
Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA)
Fmr Sen. Mike Gravel (D-AK)
DemSoc voters usually vote Democratic at the state and local level in general elections, but some of them can sometimes opt out of voting for Democratic Presidential nominees who they consider insufficiently progressive, such as Clinton and Biden.
