A short thread in praise of @Showtime's "The Comey Rule". As a political sociologist and a film geek, I watched with a critical eye, but I think @BillyRay5229 has created an outstanding political drama.

I have read the memoirs that have come out of the Trump administration. I have read Comey, McCabe, Bolton, the Mueller report, and also investigative works including the two Woodward books, the two Michael Wolff books, Greg Miller, Corn and Isikoff, and Leonig and Rucker.
When you are that immersed in a political period, it generally sets you up for disappointment when it comes to fictional portraits. Everyone film or drama about the Bush administration was underwhelming or awful.
But this is different. Clearly a lot of research has gone into this for maximum accuracy. There is attention to detail, yet, because of deft directing, it still manages to be a daramatic success, keeping the viewer engaged, painting portraits with economy.
Besides the attention to detail, the shows greatest asset however is the uncanny performances by Brendan Gleeson as Trump and Jeff Daniels as Comey. Both are outstanding actors who are given the space to shine.

In brief: it's a masterclass in political drama.

It has been interesting today to watch "anti-imperialists", the "resistance" axis, the western far right, and Zionist hasbaraists unite once again to paint Syrians as "al Qaeda" and "terrorists", as they did for the 13 years the world united to crush their revolution.
Until Syrians expelled Assad in 2024, they had to endure attacks not just from the regime, but also Iran, Russia, Hizbullah, sectarian militias from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, the US and Israel. And yet the conspiracy theories never ceased.

🧵 As in earlier wars, Israelis are being offered the mass killings in Gaza as a spectacle. They come to a mound in Sderot to enjoy the show and take selfies, using the genocide as a backdrop as you and I would a waterfall or a rainbow. @BowenBBC visited the place. Image
The authorities have now installed vending machines for the atrocity tourists in case they need refreshment. Image
Lt Col. Anthony Aguilar, a former US green beret, resigned from the Israeli-US starvation managers @GHFUpdates over what he witnessed. He is unequivocal. They are not just incompetent, they are criminal. They shoot tank round and mortars directly at starving people. Image

Just finished Bob Woodward's "War". A few takeaways. Biden and Harris detest Netanyahu and privately tried to discourage him from attacking Gaza, but Netanyahu received encouragement to "destroy Hamas" from the Jordanians, UAE, Saudis and Egyptians. Image
Image
Netanyahu constantly ignored the counsel of the Biden Administration, but instead of confronting him or withholding support, the administration came out publicly strongly backing him, lest they be criticised for not standing fully with Israel.
The UAE, Jordan, Egypt and Saudis see Gaza mainly in terms of their paranoia about the Muslim Brotherhood (of which they see Hamas as an offshoot). Their main concern was that Gaza was inflaming their citizen's opinions, complicating matters for them.

You can't be both an Assadist and pro-Palestinian. Notice who @AlHaq_org has chosen as "voices of Palestine". Aaron Mate and Roger Waters! Same people who justified Assad's siege, starvation, bombing, gassing and depopulation of Palestinian refugees in Damascus's Yarmouk camp. Image
Do you remember Yarmouk? The Palestinian refugee camp that was starved so mercilessly that when a rare UN convoy entered it, it led to this iconic photograph? Image
Well, @alhaq_org's "voice of Palestine" Aaron Mate actually went on a regime junket, stood in front of the ruins (the camp's siege lasted 5 years), and did propaganda for the regime that had destroyed it. Image

This is why I will never forgive the likes of Noam Chomsky and Seymour Hersh and @LRB and @welt. After Assad's repeated and incontrovertible use of Sarin—one of the most excruciating forms of killing ever invented—they spent years trying to absolve the mass murderer.
The @LRB gave several front pages to Seymour Hersh to promote his patently false claims based on a single unnamed source. I identified the source and, as I pointed out, he had lifted his story from the Canadian conspiracy site Globalresearch.ca. lareviewofbooks.org/article/danger…
The irony is that @LRB's few middle east specialists had advised against publishing the story. It was commissioned by their literary editor Christian Lorentzen as a way of generating controversy and driving traffic. gawker.com/5541021/new-yo….

At an "antiwar" event in DC featuring more Russian flags than at the Moscow Victory Day Parade, and bringing together the far-left and the alt-right, @rogerwaters videoed in to boldly condemn the man he believes is responsible for the destruction of Ukraine...Volodymyr Zelenskyy!
It got even more comical. He claims Zelenskyy also blew up the Nordstream pipeline and thus is responsible for "a blatant act of war" and an "extreme act of global terrorism".
As you can tell from this picture of @codepink founder @medeabenjamin surrounded by the Russian invading force’s “Z” symbol, these people are only concerned about peace (photo: @ciaglepada100)
