Some evidence from BASF regulatory affairs manager Neil Hollis at the Future Relationship with the EU Committee. He was asked about the impact of the UK having to come out of the EU's REACH system for registering chemicals, and having to create a new one for the UK:
1/ "We are extremely concerned about this. Registration costs [for the UK] are estimated to be £1 bn across the industry. This will bring no tangible benefit to enhancing safety from chemicals, and it will disadvantage UK industry in terms of global supply chain competitiveness.
2/ "This cost will be a disincentive to register chemicals or chemical volumes which are now available across the EU and UK. To put it bluntly, chemicals which are now available across the EU and UK ...will remain on the EU market, but will disappear from the UK market.
3/ "In the longer term we believe this combination of increased costs and reduced choice will result in negative impacts on factors such productivity, innovation and investment decisions here in the UK."
